Women In Need company history timeline

1984

In 1984, from the partnership of W.O.M.A.N., Inc. and Tanya Neiman of the Volunteer Legal Services Program of the San Francisco Bar Association, a restraining order clinic was established.

1991

In 1991, W.O.M.A.N., Inc. joined forces with the Asian Women’s Shelter and San Francisco Women Against Rape to create the Sister to Sister Program that provided a joint pool of multi-lingual support advocates to callers.

1995

In November 1995, the doors of the Jim & Jan Moran Family Center opened in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

1999

In 1999, Janet A. Boyle established a $1 million endowment for Women In Distress in an effort to help ensure the future operations of the organization.

2000

2000 - present: Despite growing attention and commitment to supporting women and girls to escape abuse, many countries do not have adequate coverage of shelters or safe accommodation spaces.

2011

Southern Africa: SADC Gender Protocol Barometer (Southern Africa Gender Protocol Alliance, 2011).

United States: Domestic Violence Counts 2011.

In the Summer of 2011, the new Women In Distress Jim & Jan Moran Family Center opened its doors to the community.

2012

A 24-hour census of domestic violence shelters and services (NNEDV, 2012).

2016

According to the 2016 State of Women-Owned Business Report by American Express OPEN, women-owned businesses are on the rise.

2018

National Women Build Week expands and gains momentum and by 2018, a record of more than 130,000 volunteers impact more than 5,000 in combined annual national events.

2021

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Habitat went virtual for International Women Build Week 2021.
