Worcester Art Museum company history timeline

1898

The museum formally opened in 1898 with the Rev.

1904

In 1904, WAM became one of the first museums to collect and exhibit photographs as fine art.

1905

In 1905 they reorganized the company as Worcester Pressed Steel, moving it to Barber Avenue in the Greendale section of Worcester.

In 1905, Stephen Salisbury died and left the bulk of his five million-dollar estate to the museum.

1927

By 1927, Higgins had decided to found a museum.

2013

The once-stolen Rembrandt also makes an appearance in the 2013 movie American Hustle.

In 2013, Worcester’s Higgins Armory Museum closed its doors and its renowned collection of arms and armor was integrated into WAM’s.

2017

The guiding principle for this endeavor is WAM’s new mission statement (adopted in 2017): The Worcester Art Museum connects people, communities, and cultures through the experience of art.
