Worcester State University history
Worcester State University company history timeline
Founded in 1874 as the Massachusetts State Normal School at Worcester, WSU was the fifth of nine teachers training colleges in the state.
In 1942, George Rockwood donated an additional 35 acres for campus expansion.
In 1974, our curriculum was expanded to include a B.S. in Business Administration and a B.S. in Nursing, the first Bachelor of Science program for registered nurses in New England and the first in the United States to be accredited by the National League of Nurses.
In 1990, Dowden Hall opened.
Doctor Ghosh also launched the Worcester State Foundation as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization in 1994 to attract philanthropic support for our academic initiatives, student scholarships and capital improvement projects.
Campus expansion continued with the construction of a 110,000 square-foot science building, which opened in 2000 as the Ghosh Science and Technology Center.
WSU has been named “Best Northeastern College” by the Princeton Review on multiple occasions and named “America’s Best Value College" in 2007.
In 2010, the University reorganized into two schools: the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Education, Health and Natural Sciences.
In 2018, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences comprises the departments of Business Administration and Economics, Communication, Criminal Justice, English, History and Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Urban Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, and World Languages.
