World Vision U.S. company history timeline

1950

Since World Vision began in 1950, partnering with the local and global church has been at the core of our work around the world.

The charity was founded in 1950 as World Vision Inc. by Robert Pierce and co-founder Frank Phillips with the first office in Portland, Oregon.

1954

Originally, the charity operated as a missionary service organization meeting emergency needs in crisis areas in East Asia, where in 1954 it opened an office in South Korea.

1960

The daughter of World Vision founder Bob Pierce shares a moment in World Vision history: An ABC Radio broadcast on the organization’s 10th anniversary in 1960.

1967

In 1967, the Mission Advanced Research and Communication Center (MARC) was founded by Ed Dayton as a division of World Vision International.

1977

In order to restructure, the organization World Vision International was founded in 1977 by Walter Stanley Mooneyham the then president of World Vision.

1979

Our World Vision ship became the first international rescue ship to provide food and medical assistance to 93 stranded refugees from Vietnam during Operation Seasweep in 1979.

In 1979, it co-founded with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability.

2005

According to World Vision's annual report, in 2005, 87% of its funding was spent on programs, 8% on fundraising and 5% on management and general overhead.

2006

According to World Vision's 2006 Consolidated Financial Statements, around 40% of their revenue comes from private sources, including individuals, World Vision clubs in schools, corporations and foundations.

2008

She's also been on the board of directors for World Vision Australia since 2008.

2011

Dr Monica Chibita joined World Vision's Board in Uganda in 2011.

World Vision has been working in the Middle East for more than 40 years and has been responding to Syria’s deadly civil war since it began in early 2011.

2014

According to Forbes magazine, as of December 2014, World Vision is the 11th largest charity in the United States with total revenue of over 981 million dollars.

2015

In late 2015, World Vision launched Every Last One (ELO) — a $1 billion capital campaign over eight years to make life, hope, and a future possible for 60 million people.

2020

In 2020 alone, World Vision supported 27 million people through 66 global emergency responses; provided 10 million people with food, and helped 3.4 million people to gain access to clean water.
