5 Common Career Paths For a Writer And Editor

Technical Writer

Technical Writers specialize in producing easy-to-understand instructional or informational written materials, such as media and journal articles, assessments and guidelines, and legal forms of documentation. For Technical Writers to develop well-versed content, one must conduct thorough research on the topic or idea to ensure factual legitimacy and communicate with those whose expertise aligns with the subject. Aside from producing, Technical Writers can also improve or convert complex written materials such as operating manuals or documents into one that can be easily understood by the general public.

Editor

An editor is the one responsible for polishing and refining a story, article, and any material for publication in newspapers, magazines, books, or websites. Editors have the power to either accept or reject a material as they need to ensure that every manuscript which will be offered for publishing is at the best version as it can be. There are several types of editors, from copy editors, books to managing editors, but they have few skills in common, like strong writing skills, good judgment, and leadership abilities to help guide the whole editorial team. Most of them work in the office, but it is quite becoming more regular for them to work remotely.

Account Executive

An account executive is responsible for supporting existing clients, closing client deals, and developing sales strategies to increase the company's sales and satisfaction. An account executive must be competitive enough to keep up with the constant changes in the sales industry, including the high demands of digital marketing, a different approach to product advertising, effective negotiation, and presentation skills. An account executive also requires excellent communication skills for the successful acquisition of client accounts and immediately resolve possible complaints as they arise.

Consultant

Consultants are individuals who were tapped by a company or an organization to work on a specific activity, depending on their field of expertise. They act as guides for the organization in undertaking projects that are related to their field. Consultants would usually assist organizations in planning, often giving advice when the need arises. They would, at times, take the lead in activities that involve data gathering and interpretation of data gathering results so that they can provide solid recommendations on actions that the organization may undertake. They may also guide the organization in implementing any changes brought about by their consultancy and in evaluating the effectiveness of the changes.

Graphic Designer

Graphic designers are visual communicators who create graphic ideas to deliver a message through art and images which inspire, inform, and motivate consumers with the use of computer software, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign or by hand. They have the ability to design stunning illustrations that are easily understood, even without a lot of thinking or based on the demand of their clients. It is very crucial to them as well to be flexible and to stay on top of the design trends. They create websites, posters, packaging, logos, advertising, and marketing materials, depending on the nature of the business.

Illustrated Career Paths For a Writer And Editor

Writer And Editor Jobs FAQs

Can a writer and editor make 100k?

Yes, you can make $100,000 per year as a writer and editor. While possible, it is unlikely to earn over $100k as a writer and editor because even higher-paid positions do not typically earn more than $83,000 per year. The average annual salary for a writer and editor is $52,406. For example, writer and editors in District of Columbia whose salaries are in the 90th percentile earn an average salary of $137,000.

Learn more about this question

Do writers make good editors?

Yes, writers can make good editors because both roles typically have similar education, skills, and experience. That can make it easier for a writer to transition into the role of an editor.

Both roles as writers and editors tend to have similar educational backgrounds, such as post-secondary education like a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or communication. They also usually gain skills and experience with web content, blog posts, press releases, and other written content creation.

The biggest difference is what they focus on during the content creation process. A writer's general responsibility is to create written materials to serve specific purposes.

An editor's overall role is to review what the writer has produced to provide feedback and ensure that the written content matches the company's guidelines, tone, and overall image.

So, to be a good editor, they most likely have a strong writing background (and usually are writers themselves) that helps them recognize what's working and provide useful suggestions and corrections to the writer.
