Overview
Reporting to the Acting Editorial Director of The Yale Review, the Deputy Editor/Digital Director will work in partnership with the Acting Editorial Director to edit The Yale Review's print and digital magazine and help it continue to develop its identity. The Deputy Editor is a partner in long-term and short-term planning for both The Yale Review's content and its goals of expanding its operations and re-inventing itself as a top-tier national literary publication. The Deputy Editor manages our part-time staff and runs our daily operations.
Now that The Yale Review is online, it publishes several essays a week; the Deputy Editor will be responsible for overseeing that work and the editors working on it, in addition to working with our editors on assigning and editing pieces for TYR's print quarterly. The Deputy Editor/Digital Director works closely with the managing editor/digital director to make sure that the magazine and web site are running smoothly and are published on time. The Deputy Editor runs the day-to-day work of the magazine since the Acting Editorial Director is part-time. In consultation with the Acting Editorial Director, the Deputy Editor/Digital Director will ensure that TYR and its staff have conceived and built out editorial assignments and look ahead to meet goals; the Deputy editor will help plan new initiatives and execute current ones as well as oversee the process of commissioning, editing, and publishing on schedule, with the assistance of The Review's graduate student fellows. We're looking for an enterprising, audience-focused and collaborative Multimedia Editor who will be responsible for editing daily videos on tight deadlines as well as occasional larger enterprise projects. They will work closely with the audience staff and reporters and editors across the newsroom to assign or create video content that will reach millions of viewers. This role represents our desire to continue to push the boundaries of traditional visual storytelling.
Duties and responsibilities:
* Edit video from reporters and photographers into polished one- to three-minute videos, sometimes under tight deadlines
* Work closely with newsroom leaders to ensure key stories get the best visual treatment, including photos
* Populate a daily schedule of expected incoming video clips and communicate any changes to the audience staff
* Understand the topics that can work well for social video and ensure those opportunities are pursued, lending a hand with editing as needed
* Research, pitch and produce original videos that are both informative and entertaining
* Optimize videos across platforms by demonstrating a strong understanding of engagement tactics and search engine optimization. This includes titles, thumbnails, metadata and more.
* Communicate effectively and collaboratively across departments during breaking and planned news events
* Analyze and interpret metrics and use them to inform real-time and long-term coverage decisions
* Help build and maintain a library of video assets
* Participate in news meetings to learn how stories take shape and better understand which audiences we're trying to reach
Qualifications:
* Experience editing digital media, preferably in a newsroom environment
* Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills
* Ability to shoot high-quality and raw video if necessary
* Deep understanding of social video editing for platforms like Instagram and YouTube Shorts - you can take various raw clips and make a truly fascinating video
* Quick, organized, technical problem solver able to consistently meet deadlines
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent in journalism, English, communications or related field preferred
* Ability to work a flexible schedule for breaking news and special content opportunities
* Highly organized and detail-oriented with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks

Responsibilities:
The Assignment Desk Editor I will hire camera crews, satellite trucks and studios, and arranges feeds and/or transfer of content. Strategizes and organizes movement of IP-based transmission devices for coverage. Coordinates the efforts of freelance and staff producers and associated production/technical personnel to provide video and audio sports/news material for ESPN platforms. Handles all ancillary crew needs, such as parking, credentials, Ethernet, phone lines, and permits. Understands basic rights and clearances issues. Participates in strategic editorial and logistical planning of coverage. Acts as the liaison between the Assignment Desk and Media Assets, Media Operations, and Transmission. Collaborates with ABC NewsOne/ABC affiliates, as well as other networks, on breaking news stories, sharing of information, video and sound

Stays informed and up to date on sporting events and has above-average sports knowledge
