1855

Providing the best educational environment Downriver since 1855!

1856

SCHOOLS: Wyandotte Public Schools’ first school house was called the “Old Brown School House” built in 1856.

1867

The public school system in Kansas was established by the state legislature in 1867.

1882

Prior to 1882 – There was no free public high school in Wyandott City.

1886

No high school was established, however, until 1886, the year Wyandotte consolidated with two smaller cities to form the present Kansas City, Kansas.

1887

1887 – Eleven girls in first graduating class.

1897

1897 – Bond issue for new high school failed.

1911

1911 – January 4. ” Kansas City, Kansas High School” chosen as name. (Later, there was opposition to the name as some felt it made it sound as though this was the only high school in Kansas City, Kansas and the Argentine High School and Rosedale High School were in existence.)

1920

1920 – First honor society.

1923

In addition to high school classes, the school also provided space for a junior college beginning in 1923.

1928

1928 – January 3: Name formally changed to ” Wyandotte High School.” (The school was formally called Kansas City , Kansas High School and unofficially Central High School in the past.)

Accordingly, on February 16, 1928, the Board acquired some 28 acres of land on the south side of Minnesota Avenue between North 22nd Street and North Washington Boulevard from Jesse A. Hoel, who had previously operated a golf club there for residents in his Westheight Manor development.

1930

These new policies aimed to solve the economic problems created by the depression of the 1930’s.

1933

While the NRA was effective, it was bringing America closer to socialism by giving the President unconstitutional powers. It was created in June 1933 under the terms of the National Industrial Recovery Act.

1938

No major New Deal legislation was enacted after 1938.

1939

In addition, the New Deal program founded the Works Projects Administration in 1939.

1955

Built in 1955 (formerly Lincoln Jr.

1985

1985 – December 4 – Wyandotte High School approved by the Kansas historic Sites Board of Review for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.

2003

Wyandotte was part of Phase III, which was completed in the summer of 2003.

2004

Received a “Great IDEAS” grant (funded/sponsored by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Fund) for the 2004-05 school year, which encourages teachers in SLC’s (Small Learning Communities) to work together to develop innovative programs and projects to improve student learning.

2020

Wyandotte is 5.3 square miles and the population according to the 2020 Census was 24,580 with 11,070 homes.
