Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs company history timeline

1812

Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, LLP traces its roots back more than 200 years to 1812, when Alexander Scott Bullitt opened his law practice.

1865

1865: Thomas Walker Bullitt, son of William Christian Bullitt, begins his law practice in Kentucky at age 27, after serving as a Confederate soldier.

1879

New AlbanyOrbison, O’Connor, MacGregor & Mattox was founded in 1879 as Jewett & Jewett.

1927

1927: Wilson Wyatt begins his law practice in Louisville.

1941

He becomes mayor of Louisville in 1941, six days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

1948

1948: Bullitt, Dawson and Tarrant law firm is formed, including Charles I. Dawson, a former judge on the United States Court of Appeals, Sixth Circuit.

1951

1951: John E. Tarrant assembles the options on the real estate necessary to develop General Electric’s Appliance Park.

1952

LexingtonBrown, Sledd & McCann was founded in 1952 as McCann, Sledd, & McCann.

1960

Representing a consortium of business people known as the “Louisville Sponsoring Group” that helped launch the professional boxing career of “The Greatest,” Muhammad Ali, after his gold medal victory in the 1960 Olympics. (Click here to view Gordon B. Davidson’s biography.)

1970

1970: John E. Tarrant recruits Bert Combs to leave the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals bench to help form Tarrant, Combs, Blackwell & Bullitt.

1971

1971: Thomas Walker Bullitt develops Oxmoor Center Shopping Mall.

1980

1980: Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs is ultimately formed through a merger of Wyatt, Grafton & Sloss with Tarrant, Combs & Bullitt.

1986

1986: Gordon Davidson, Stewart Connor and Frank Mellen advise Barry Bingham Sr. on the sale of The Courier-Journal and Louisville Times, Standard Gravure, WHAS-TV and WHAS-AM for more than $400 million.
