ESSENTIAL DUTIES: * Operates heavy equipment utilized in the moving, covering, and compacting of waste deposited into the landfill. * Maintains road allowing easy access in and out of landfill sites; keeps landfill and surrounding area, including Hwy 19 and Bluff Road leading to the landfill, clean and free of debris. * Observes waste to identify hazardous waste or other materials excluded from deposit in the landfill. * Monitors customer activities to assure compliance with established rules and regulations; operates radio and two-way communications as needed to alert equipment operators of activity or waste loads. * Addresses public complaints. * Provides assistance on special construction and maintenance projects undertaken within the landfill. * Checks and services assigned equipment; performs routine maintenance and emergency repairs; reports mechanical problems to supervisor for repair; operates a variety of hand and power tools in performing general maintenance of vehicles and equipment. * May assist in performing scale-house duties, weighs incoming vehicles, determines fees, accepts and receives payments, inspects loads to verify materials and prevent illegal dumping. * May assist in performing general office duties; operates computer to create invoices to carries and haulers; creates spreadsheets to track various aspects of the landfill operation. * Operates the landfill according to the laws and regulations of the State of South Dakota and Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. * Enforces City of Vermillion policies on the use of the landfill. * Performs related duties as required.
