Xavier High School was founded in 1943 by the Jesuit Fathers of St Francis Xavier Parish and the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Doctor Norman C. Francis, a 1952 XU grad, named first lay president, begins 47-year tenure
Mother Katharine’s death in 1955 had a profound impact on Xavier in many ways, the most obvious being financial.
The short history is this: Xavier opened its doors in 1963 and was founded by The Most Rev.
The school was granted College Preparatory status in 1982 and changed its name to Xavier College Preparatory.
Xavier formally incorporated, filed for its own 501(c)3 status and obtained 96 acres of undeveloped land granted by the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation in 2004.
Xavier was hard-hit in 2005 by Hurricane Katrina (much of the campus was underwater), but $130 million in renovations as well as the construction of the state-of-the-art Pharmacy Pavilion, Convocation Center, and St Katharine Drexel Chapel, leave no traces of that tragic event.
Xavier has been blessed, (beginning with only a freshman class of 48 in 2006), to educate and graduate over 1200 students, with another 528 enrolled to date.
