Xavier University history

Then in 1840, Fenwick's successor, John Baptist Purcell, asked the Society of Jesus to take control of the school, and the Jesuits changed the name to St Xavier College.

There were several debates about closing the college during this period, but ultimately in 1854 the Jesuits decided to end the boarding program and only take students from the Cincinnati area.

In 1911, they purchased a large plot of land to build a new campus.

The College moved in 1912 to its current location after the purchase of 26 acres from the Avondale Athletic Club.

Xavier was founded in 1915 by Sister Katherine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, a Catholic order established to serve African Americans and other racial minorities.

The institution was first a high school, then became a two-year normal school in 1917.

In 1924, a new dormitory opened, once again allowing students from outside of the Cincinnati area to board on campus.

Xavier became a four year college in 1925 when it opened the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Instead, in February 1943, the federal government chose Xavier as the site for Air Force cadet training, which allowed the college to keep its doors open for the rest of the war.

The university also began offering graduate programs for the first time in 1946.

Though founded as a men’s university, it admitted women to some courses long before it adopted a comprehensive coeducational policy in 1969.
