Y.M.C.A. of Reading and Berks County company history timeline

1858

The YMCA of Reading and Berks County was founded June 22, 1858, when the first board of directors was elected.

Opening in 1858, the Lebanon Valley Railroad became a subsidiary of the Reading Railroad, and a lucrative route connecting Reading with Harrisburg.

1868

One of these inventors was a dentist from Bernville, Berks County, William H. Scholl, who designed a new coupling system in 1868.

1884

Youth camping was first started by the Y in 1884.

1890

By 1890, the average brakeman had an 11% chance of being injured – with nearly half of their injuries occurring during coupling.

1900

Despite some corporate resistance, implementation of the Railroad Safety Appliance Act was a relatively smooth process, and studies showed that employee injuries declined sharply after 1900, despite the fact that railroads were greatly expanding their operations.

1916

Jerry H. Edwards, the secretary of the Reading YMCA left for Egypt in December 1916.

1942

The Tri Valley Branch, headquartered at the Fleetwood Community Center, was originally known as the Kutztown YMCA and was founded in 1942.

1985

The Central Branch was nearly destroyed by fire on January 28, 1985 leaving the Y family devastated.

1986

Established in 1986 as a federated library system, Berks County Public Libraries includes 19 libraries with 23 locations, each independently governed and operated by a local Board of Directors.

1997

The building was purchased by the library board in 1997 from John Printz.

1998

The library reopened as the Louisa Gonser Community Library on July 2, 1998.

2011

In 2011 the library was renamed the Kutztown Community Library.
