YMCA of Greater Kansas City company history timeline

1885

Summer Camp: The oldest known summer camp, Camp Dudley, first opened in 1885 and countless numbers of boys and girls have since learned the skills and wonders of camping through the Y, developing critical skills and making memories along the way.

1915

Did you know that Black History Month has roots associated with the YMCA? In 1915, Carter G. Woodson, a University of Chicago alumnus, arrived in Chicago to attend a national celebration of the 50th anniversary of emancipation sponsored by the state of Illinois.

1920

In 1920, a group of African American baseball team owners led by Andrew "Rube" Foster met at the Paseo YMCA here in Kansas City and formed the Negro National League, the first successful organized black baseball league.

1946

A Nobel Peace Prizewinner: YMCA leader John R. Mott was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946 for the Y's groundbreaking role in raising global awareness and support and for the organization’s humanitarian efforts.

2010

In 2010, as First Lady, Michelle Obama launched the pillars of her “Let’s Move Outside” campaign against childhood obesity at the Alexandria YMCA, a branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington.

2019

On June 6, 2019 the YMCA marks 175 years as more than a place, it is a nonprofit organization that offers programs and services designed to foster youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
