Responsibilities Enforce all posted rules and any other rules that are required to ensure the safety of all participants. Teach swim lessons to participants at appropriate age levels, per national guidelines of course levels and ratios. Plan lessons for classes, be well prepared for lesson. Responsible for set up and tear down of lessons (includes all utilized equipment). Take attendance at all classes. Responsible for updating all areas and certifications through the YMCA training certification program as needed for position. Responsible to assist in the cleanliness of the pool and reporting any maintenance needs. Qualifications Must be at least 16 years of age. National CPR, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen and YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification. Not certified? No problem - we provide free training and certification! Must pass skills test that includes: Tread water for two minutes. Demonstrate Stage 5 proficiency in at least four of the following six strokes by swimming 25 yards of each: Front Crawl, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Butterfly, Elementary Backstroke, and Backstroke. Must be able to relate and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.

Assist in the recruitment of volunteers for all swim meets and other swim team programs. Current knowledge of all areas of training and certifications as well as YMCA of Greater Kansas City employee handbook. Attend community functions and events to promote the YMCA, its mission and programs. Maintain a safe and clean, well organized pool office and area. Assist in the ideas for retention and sale initiatives for all Aquatics programs and members. Assist supervisor with ideas in the marketing for the Aquatics Department. POSITION SUMMARY: Provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes. Instructor spots are available for both group and private lessons. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly. Builds effective, authentic relationships with students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers. Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers students and parents to other programs. Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.). Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary. Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment. Trains and supervises class aides as assigned. Must be able to work nights and weekends. All other miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned by supervisor. Qualifications Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards. YMCA Swim Instructor certification, or equivalent preferred At least 16 years of age. Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques. Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
