YMCA of Snohomish County company history timeline

1918

Programs and membership expanded until, by 1918, the Y was holding swimming lessons in Port Gardner Bay, a community Halloween party, hikes and summer camp on Whidbey Island, a gymnastics exhibition with the Everett Theater, and several large Bible classes conducted by local pastors.

1922

In 1922, the Y established a boys’ camp at Lake Roesiger and the next year at Lake Goodwin.

1926

Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, is greatly owed to Doctor Carter G. Woodson, who first launched “[Black] History Week” in 1926.

1930

Unfortunately, in 1930 the City of Everett took over the lake for a settling basin and water storage reservoir.

1949

By 1949, the number of youth served by the Y had grown markedly and new programs were developed to support youth.

1976

President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history

1988

In 1988, the Everett YMCA changed its name to the YMCA of Snohomish County.

1989

1993

In 1993, the YMCA launched “Partnership ‘93”, the largest capital campaign in the history of Snohomish County, which raised more than $7 million in pledges.

1996

1999

In 1999, the Monroe YMCA became an operating branch of the YMCA of Snohomish County, together with the Everett, Marysville/North County, Mukilteo, and Southeast Family Branches.

2001

The My Achievers Program (MAP) started in September 2001 serving 25 youth and has grown to 14 sites serving more than 600 youth throughout the course of a school year.

2007

2010

In 2010, the Southeast Family Branch was greatly expanded and renamed the Mill Creek Family Branch.

In 2010, as first lady, Michelle Obama launched the pillars of her “Let’s Move” campaign against childhood obesity at the Alexandria YMCA, a branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington.

2016

In 2016, the Stanwood-Camano branch opened to serve the communities in northern Snohomish County and Camano Island.
