The Utilization Specialist is responsible for proactively monitoring utilization of services for patients to optimize reimbursement for the facility. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Act as liaison between managed care organizations and the facility professional clinical staff. Conduct reviews, in accordance with certification requirements, of insurance plans or other managed care organizations (MCOs) and coordinate the flow of communication concerning reimbursement requirements. Monitor patient length of stay and extensions and inform clinical and medical staff on issues that may impact length of stay. Gather and develop statistical and narrative information to report on utilization, non-certified days (including identified causes and appeal information), discharges and quality of services, as required by the facility leadership or corporate office. This person will lead WellStar's Inpatient and Outpatient Coding auditors in proactively identifying risk and addressing compliance issues as they pertain to coding/billing within the Wellstar Inpatient / Outpatient hospital populations. This department conducts regular audits and monitors activities to promote compliance with federal regulations related to the Federal Healthcare Programs (i.e. Medicare and Medicaid and others). This team provides compliance education with an emphasis on coding and billing regulations for Hospital services in Wellstar facilities. This person will coordinate the above audits/education, research and respond to compliance and other coding / billing related questions and prepare communication/responses both in verbal and in written formats. This person will be responsible for coordinating internal reviews, compliance training as well as targeted educational programs throughout each year. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Work closely with hospital discharge planners, social workers, case managers, physicians and management, as well as provide education to staff to generate referral sources. Develop strong relationships with key referral sources and their personnel, identifying new opportunities for partnering and growth. Manage leads from referral sources and ensures efficient admissions process for clients. Expeditiously document all activity in company Customer Relationship Manager (Salesforce). Work closely with corporate Consumer Marketing team to ensure utilization of their resources and implementation of best practice in brand development. Coordinate with clinical assessment team on referrals for admission based on the facility services offered. Educate patients, families, community and other referral sources on programs, services and amenities provided within facility. Coordinate the completion of admission process and ensure appropriate resources are obtained. Travel frequently within community, schedule meetings and develop contacts/referral sources; document referral sources within appropriate contact management system; report on referral/activity management, as defined by management. The ideal candidate will perform essential duties under the close supervision of a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Lead Nurse, and will be accountable for all patient care provided during their shift. This role requires adherence to all Standards of Nursing Care and a strong commitment to promoting teamwork. Key responsibilities may include: Rooming patients, taking vital signs, and accurately documenting patient information in the electronic medical record. Administering injections and routine office treatments such as nebulizer, ear lavage, and peak flow. Assisting with patient flow and scheduling diagnostic procedures, clinic appointments, and hospital procedures. Handling phone calls, including screening calls from patients for the provider and calling in new or refilling medications. Ensuring exam rooms are clean, orderly, and well-stocked. Maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations. Requirements 3 to 5 years of previous medical assistant experience in an office-based practice is required. A High School Diploma or GED is required. Medical Assistant Certification is preferred. Qualifications: Genuine interest in the welfare of the ill. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to read and interpret medical documents, including ICD-9 Manuals and physician orders. Ability to solve practical problems and define issues, collect data, and draw valid conclusions. Proficiency in basic arithmetic, including fractions, percentages, and ratios.
