1816

1816 An act authorising the governor to incorporate the York Water Company, February 8, 1816.

The York Water Company was started in 1816 by a group of local business men who were concerned about fire protection.

In 1816, when pedestrians, mules and horses traveled the streets, the newly founded York Water Company installed a wooden water pipe around the Colonial Courthouse, at that time located in the center of the city square.

Back in 1816, a group of enterprising Yorkers took advantage of this bountiful natural resource and formed the York Water Company.

The York Water Company was started in 1816 by a group of local business men who were concerned about fire protection. It is the oldest investor owned utility in the United States and it has the longest record of consecutive dividends since 1816.

1827

1827 A supplement to an act, entitled "an act authorizing the Governor to incorporate the York water company," passed the eighty day of February, one thousand eight hundred and sixteen.

1838

April 16, 1838 Section 51 incorporated the York Borough Water Company

1840

1840 A further supplement to an act, entitled "an act authorizing the Governor to incorporate the York water company," passed the eighty day of February, one thousand eight hundred and sixteen.

The York Water Company installed cast-iron pipes in 1840 and has acquired several nearby water companies since it was formed.

1849

In 1849, the first steam pumping station was built along Codorus Creek.

1850

A Birkinbine pumping engine operated by both steam and water was added in June, 1850 to pump water from Codorus Creek into a reservoir.

1903

- 1903: Reservoir Park opened to the public.

1912

For the first time since its construction in 1912, Lake Williams was completely drained in order to install a valve on the upstream face of the dam, as well as a pipe liner.

1913

By February 4, 1913 the new dam was full and overflowing.

- 1913: Construction of Lake Williams.

1925

Completion of the “Best Reforesting in the World.” In 1925, The Engineering Society of York decided to make conservation conscious President Coolidge aware of York’s exemplary reforestation efforts.

1928

It is the former site of the home of Samuel Small and was purchased in 1928.

1929

Unchanged: Women's first floor powder room features original stained-glass art. "It's the room that 1929 forgot.

- 1929: A new main office opens.

These roses, part of the 1929 building's artwork, are believed to be the first use of the white rose to be incorporated into the architecture of a building in York.

1956

According to York Water legend, the fire in the first boiler was started from the pipe of a workman and burned continuously for 107 years until 1956 when the Company converted to electric pumps.

1967

- 1967: Completion of Lake Redman.

1993

The water basins at Reservoir Park were covered in 1993 to meet regulations and best practices regarding protection of treated potable water.

1996

- 1996: The 180th anniversary of the company, and the restoration and refurbishing of the ceiling.

2006

- 2006: The 190th anniversary of the company, which now serves more than 30 municipalities with a daily consumption of about 18 million gallons.

2016

The York Water Company is also the oldest investor-owned public utility in the United States and will celebrate their bicentennial in 2016.

2017

2020

On September 14, 2020, York Water acquired Letterkenny Township Municipal Authority wastewater treatment plant.
