Youth Homes culture

  • Why Youth Homes is a Great Place To Work

Youth Homes is a great place to work because most employees either have been or know somebody in the position of the youth they serve. Everybody works together towards a common goal: improving youths’ futures and connecting them with the best resources available.

As Madison told us, “As someone who does marketing and works in fund development, I would have nobody to develop funds for if there were no providers in the community doing the work that they do. And providers would not be able to provide their services unless we were in the office raising the money.”

  • The Unique Aspects of Working at Youth Homes

What’s unique about working at Youth Homes is the empathic leadership that is void of power dynamics. Leadership supports everyone, and that ethos flows through the organization, from the CEO to the VPs to clinical directors to everybody else.

According to a recent internal survey, nearly 100% of the respondents feel their supervisor encourages an excellent work-life balance, as well as feeling appropriately acknowledged and appreciated for their efforts.

As Madison says, “Everybody has been at a job where there's poor leadership, and it can really change the landscape of your job and make you hate it. I feel very thankful for having great leadership here.”

  • How the Culture at Youth Homes Impacts Work

As a mission-driven non-profit, Youth Homes’ culture aims to support providers who work with youths and provide mental health services. Being a provider is challenging work, mentally and physically, and everyone wants “providers to be successful,” according to Madison.

Mental health teams often get together to problem-solve their cases and celebrate their successes. Folks at Youth Homes ensure that providers feel appreciated and that the whole team understands what they do is life-changing and critical.

“When you really care about your job and love it, you tend to start thinking about it all the time,” says Madison.

  • Transparency is Core at Youth Homes

A core value that comes through time and again at Youth Homes is transparency -- both internally and externally. As a nonprofit, a portion of its operating funds comes from donors, so it's essential to be transparent about where those funds are going.

This deep belief in transparency holds Youth Homes accountable for the money they’ve been given and encourages people to continue giving to the mission.

There are also larger, agency-wide meetings where every department openly discusses what they're working on.

As Madison put it, “Everyone is very aware that none of our jobs would be possible without each other, so we all help each other accomplish our common mission.”

  • Youth Homes: Pulling it All Together

People at Youth Homes feel comfortable going to their supervisor to discuss on-the-job challenges. Everyone understands that being a provider is challenging work, mentally and physically, and works together to help them be as successful as possible.

Teams have monthly get-togethers to celebrate staff birthdays and service anniversaries as a way of taking lighthearted breaks from their difficult work.

“I think everybody really understands” the interconnectedness of Youth Homes’ work and mission, “and it very much provides a togetherness within the organization,” says Madison.
