Residential Youth Mentor - Day Shift

$17.00 Per Hour

Calo is looking to hire Youth Coach/Mentors for our Residential Treatment facility in Lake Ozark, Missouri. If you have enjoyed working as a summer camp counselor or just want to have a career that makes an impact of today's youth, then this is the job for you. Responsibilities

As a Coach/Mentor you will participate in the following with your kiddos:

* Adventure Therapy to teach trust (hiking, fishing, canoeing, biking, and more)
* Canine Therapy that emulates the human foster/adoption process, and teaches caregiving.
* Fun in our Milieu environment that encourages creating relationships that are profoundly meaningful. Our Milieu has ping pong tables, a puppy training zone, pool table, and comfy seating for just hanging out.
* Provide a safe and secure environment for our students

Shifts: We offer 12 hour shifts (3 on 4 off/4 on 3 off) with Wednesday being the alternating day Hours: 6am to 6pm

Qualifications

Required:

* High School diploma or GED
* 21 years of age or older
* Ability to pass state and federal background checks
* A desire to facilitate student growth through a team approach while working with other care providers

Preferred:

* Experience working with youth (camps, church groups, sports teams, etc)
* CPR Certified

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Roots for Peace (RFP) organizes immigrant Latinx youth to address health and economic inequities in Los Angeles. Through community organizing and coalition building, RFP supports youth to create structural change necessary to invest in systems of community care, with leadership development, and an intersectional, anti-oppression framework at the center.

SUMMARY OF PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Youth Mentors will work closely with the RFP staff team to carry out a strong youth-led Organizing Program that supports youth to build power, develop organizing skills and win changes that impact their lives and that of their communities in South Central and the Greater Los Angeles Area. Supporting the execution of the Organizing Program will include helping plan and execute Monthly Leadership Development Days and supporting with any logistics related to the Organizing Program or coalition/campaign work and events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The key responsibilities of the Youth Organizing Mentor include the following:

* Support staff with recruitment efforts for Youth Organizing programming.
* Attend planning meetings with Staff for Youth Organizing Programming.
* Attend and help execute Monthly Leadership development days of Youth Organizing Program.
* Attend actions and events related to campaigns and coalitions.
* Provide mentorship for youth participants during leadership days and actions
* Serve as a youth mentor and role model to Organizing Program participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE:

* Demonstrate interest in community organizing / social justice work with local youth of color. Experience preferred.

OTHER REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

* Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred.
* Be interested and aware of policy issues affecting youth regarding immigration, the criminal justice system, and local education.
* Ability to work as part of a team and to be able to work independently.
* Practice non-violent communication and be committed to building healthy relationships with staff, youth, and community members.
* Commitment to Quaker values and testimonies. Understanding of and compatibility with the principles and philosophy of the American Friends Service Committee including non-violence and the belief in the intrinsic worth of every individual.
* Understanding of and commitment to the principles, concerns, and considerations of AFSC in regard to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender and sexual orientation, and disabilities. Demonstrated ability to work and communicate with diverse staff.

COMPENSATION: $17 per hour for 16 hours per month for 8 months- Non-Exempt. There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker's compensation, and social security.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NIGHT SHIFT YOUTH MENTOR

As a Night Shift Youth Mentor, you have the rewarding job of providing direct care to our youth participants during nighttime hours. You act as an advisor, supervising students overnight, during dormitory activities, and while transporting them on-campus. Additionally, you perform visual dorm checks to ensure student safety. As part of your direct care position, you are awake and alert at all times while on shift.

You ensure that safety and containment are maintained at all times. You patiently follow protocol in maintaining discipline among students. Your empathy comes through in your interactions with each participant that you work with, but you also maintain proper professional boundaries at all times.
