Americorps youth program coordinator job description

Based in Chicago, Illinois Safe Schools Alliance (the Alliance) is a program of Public Health Institute of Metropolitan Chicago (PHIMC). The Alliance's mission is to promote safety, support, and healthy development for LGBTQ+ youth in Illinois schools and communities, through advocacy, education, youth organizing, and research. The Alliance has nearly 15 years of experience working with young people, community organizations, schools and districts, and state agencies towards the goal of fostering safer school spaces for LGBTQ+ youth. Through each of its programmatic areas - youth leadership and organizing, policy and advocacy, and professional development - the Alliance approaches its work as transformational rather than transactional and its programming is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and rooted in equity. The Youth Leadership and Organizing (YLO) VISTA will work alongside a cohort of VISTAs to support the Alliance program and the Safe Schools Consortia Project (Consortia). The goal of the Consortia is to create regional networks of education leaders who are committed to ensuring their school district(s) are safe and affirming environments for youth who hold LGBTQ+ identities. This project increases the Alliance's capacity to advance it's mission statewide and builds on peer-learning principles to empower school leadership to become regional experts in the Safe Schools Movement. The YLO VISTA will support the Alliance's youth leadership work, the development of youth-facing workshops, and resources for the Consortia project. The Alliance seeks applicants who are aligned with the program mission, thrive in team-based environments, demonstrate initiative and strong organizational skills, can be flexible and creative, and have a solutions-oriented mindset. Special skills may include youth leadership and youth development experience, some experience with peer-to-peer learning models, facilitation and/or teaching experience, and public speaking. Further help on this page can be found by clicking here.

Member Duties : Youth leadership and organizing is a critical component of the Alliance's work. The Alliance coordinates the statewide network of gender and sexuality alliances (GSAs). These student-run organizations unite LGBTQ+ and allied youth to build community and organize around issues impacting their schools and communities. Within this network, the Alliance recruits applicants for its Youth Committee, which acts as a steering committee for the statewide network, and develops and facilitates large-scale youth leadership programming through a peer education model. The Youth Leadership and Organizing VISTA will support the Alliance's youth development work described above and helping to pilot and implement the Safe Schools Consortia Project in northern Illinois. Specifically, they be supporting the management of youth leadership events and activities, the development and implementation of a Training of Trainers (TOT) model and toolkit, and supporting the creation of youth-facing workshops.
