YWCA Greater Cincinnati company history timeline

1868

Since its founding in 1868, the YWCA has been a keystone for positive change in the lives of hundreds of thousands of women and their families.

1878

FIRST to provide leadership in forming the Associated Charities of Cincinnati, now called the United Way and Community Chest (1878)

1890

FIRST physical fitness classes for women (1890)

1915

FIRST women’s basketball team in the city (1915)

1976

In August 1976, a public hearing on spouse abuse was held in the YWCA auditorium.

1978

The YWCA’s efforts led to the opening of Cincinnati’s first domestic violence women’s shelter, the Alice Paul House, in January 1978.

1979

In March 1979, YWCA opened the House of Peace Shelter that serves survivors of domestic violence and children in the rural counties of Clinton, Clermont and Brown.

1998

In 1998, YWCA purchased and renovated a new shelter in Hamilton County.

2012

In 2012, YWCA changed the name of the shelter to the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter.

2015

In 2015, the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter expanded in-shelter services to include all survivors of Domestic Violence, including men and transgender individuals.
