Zappos.com company history timeline

1999

In 1999, Nick had this idea that no investor wanted to touch.

As mentioned above, Zappos started as an online shop of shoes in the prehistory of the eCommerce, back in 1999.

In the Beginning, 1999

The timing seemed right too, since Forrester Research, Inc., an Internet trend watcher, released data finding that online shopping would top $1.6 billion in 1999 and footwear purchasing alone would account for some $120 million for the year.

2000

Footwear News (May 15, 2000) called the partnership "another marriage of bricks and clicks," which seemed to benefit both traditional retailers and their online counterparts.

2000: Zappos.com gets $1.1 million in funding and a new CEO from Venture Frog.

2001

2001: Sales climb to $8.6 million as Zappos gains momentum.

2002

2002: Sales for Zappos.com top $170 million and the firm relocates to Las Vegas.

2003

2003: Two brick-and-mortar Zappos stores are opened.

2005

In 2005, the company doubled its turnover and Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon, wanted to buy it.

2006

In 2006 - Nick decided to leave Zappos, leaving Tony the sole CEO, which today, he still remains.

Sales for the year were projected to reach as high as $300 million, and even higher for 2006.

2009

A few years later in July 2009, Amazon acquired Zappos in an agreement worth $1.2 billion at closing.

In 2009 Bezos curried favor with Hsieh again, this time offering 1,200 million dollars.

2022

Shoes make up 80% of the company’s business, with handbags and other accessories accounting for the additional 20% of revenue as of 2022.
