But, on his election in 1980, Zimbabwe’s new leader, Robert Mugabe, called for reconciliation between black and white, words that defined the spirit of the country’s first decade of independence.

In September 2018, the former national team coach Heath Streak submitted an application to the court to have Zimbabwe Cricket liquidated, in relation to outstanding debts.
Nevertheless, due to the improvement shown by other associate teams and the format being reduced to just 10 teams, Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup.
As of 2021, the director of cricket for Zimbabwe is former batsman Hamilton Masakadza.
