Zoo Atlanta company history timeline

1889

From either being one of the first Zoos in the United States in 1889.

Zoo Atlanta can be traced to its beginning as the Grant Park Zoo, established in 1889 from the remnants of a traveling circus.

1970

In 1970, a small group of concerned citizens founded the Atlanta Zoological Society in hopes of raising funds and awareness for the institution.

1984

After the National Zoo accreditation committee found Zoo Atlanta to not be up to par with the rest of the Zoos in the United States, it lost its accreditation in 1984.

Owing to small cages and lack of facilities, the municipal zoo ended up at the top of a list of the 10 worst zoos in the country in 1984, which led to discussions about closing it.

1999

A pair of giant pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, made their debut at Zoo Atlanta in 1999.

2006

Where they have turned out to be a great success, peaking at the birth of the first Panda born in the United States for the past seven years in 2006.

2009

Zoo Atlanta is most notable for two giant pandas, Lun Lun and Yang Yang, brought on loan from the Chengdu Zoo in China until 2009.
