Position Summary: Audubon Florida seeks a Shorebird Biologist to support beach-nesting season bird conservation work in the Florida Panhandle. The Shorebird Biologist will work remotely in the Panama City region of Bay and Gulf counties and travel to complete the majority of work on and around beaches and islands including Tyndall Critical Wildlife Area, islands and beaches and adjacent to or within Tyndall Air Force Base and Eglin Cape San Blas. This is a full-time seasonal position working 40 hours a week between February 16th and August 16th, 2026 including some weekend days and holidays, such as Memorial Day and Independence Day. The Shorebird Biologist will be responsible for performing beach-nesting bird monitoring and protection work primarily in Bay and Gulf counties, Florida Compensation: $20.00 / hour Additional Job Description Essential Functions Breeding and nonbreeding shorebird surveys including nest searching for imperiled bird species including Snowy Plovers, Wilson's Plovers, Black Skimmers, Least Terns, and American Oystercatchers. Posting symbolic fencing around beach-nesting bird sites and maintaining said posting; Monitoring nest sites weekly, at minimum, for evidence of disturbance or predation Protecting sites from disturbance through predation management and game camera monitoring in cooperation with site managers and partner agencies. Educating beachgoers about coastal bird species while encouraging compliance with posted areas, and engaging in outreach to user groups. Collaborate with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologist to ensure all survey, monitoring, and posting is completed at sites. Post nesting sites with symbolic fencing as required or immediately when new nest sites are located. Survey sites weekly, conduct banded bird resighting, and enter data into the Florida Shorebird Database and other database as required. Assist with other shorebird conservation and survey efforts. Communicate management needs to supervisor. Contribute to report writing as needed and submitting content for program-related publications in a variety of media. Contribute photographs and short stories about birds and bird stewardship for use on Audubon website and in social media. Responsible for periodic cleaning and maintenance of program vehicles, trailers, and UTVs as needed. Other job-related duties as assigned. Maintains and fosters culture of safety. Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor's degree in biology, wildlife ecology or related field preferred. 1 year/season demonstrated expertise in bird identification and performing demographic bird surveys using rigorous protocols is required. At least two years/seasons of experience in shorebird or seabird identification and rigorous surveys is required. Snowy Plover experience preferred. Comfort in pulling operating vehicles while towing a small trailer. Comfort boating/kayaking in open-water conditions is required. Demonstrated success with accurate recording of field-collected data and data entry using MS Excel, MS Access, or online web portal data entry is required. Superior communication skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and with multiple stakeholder groups. Excellent problem-solving skills, and decision-making skills. One who possesses a high degree of integrity. Demonstrated experience working with external partners and volunteers. Must have a valid driver's license and ability to pass background check to access Air Force Base facilities. Must be able to lift up to 35lbs, and be able to traverse long distances, including miles across a beach carrying spotting scope, binoculars, and daypack with or without accommodation. Demonstrated experience with performing fieldwork in challenging coastal conditions especially in hot conditions. Must be able to work long days, weekends, and holidays as needed, in Florida summer field conditions. DESCRIPTION OF WORK In this position, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive statewide surveillance of tick species as part of the Tick Surveillance and Testing Program. Your duties will include performing laboratory analyses on biological samples to ascertain the age, sex, and species of ticks, as well as other arthropods when necessary. You will meticulously record and input field data from tick collections into the internal database, collaborating closely with Vector Management and regional personnel on investigative studies related to tick and arthropod activity. As a vital member of the statewide rapid response team addressing ticks and associated diseases, you will also contribute to the development of strategies alongside other program staff to enhance or innovate existing monitoring programs. Additionally, you will prepare analyses and reports on Vector Management studies, collect aquatic samples using specialized equipment to assess water quality parameters, and gather samples of black flies or other macroinvertebrates for water quality evaluations. Your work will involve utilizing equipment to monitor environmental parameters during sampling, including continuous measurements of temperature, dissolved oxygen, and humidity. You will collect samples of mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks, using the data to inform various metrics that determine nuisance thresholds and assess disease risk. A GIS-based Oracle database will be employed to upload sampling data and establish sampling sites, with GIS technology utilized to generate maps upon request to illustrate sampling results and disease presence. Furthermore, you will promote the Department's mission by inputting data in a prescribed format that adheres to the data quality standards outlined by guidance, training, and policy across all of DEP's electronic data systems, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of entries while minimizing duplicative entries and data quality issues through the use of system-specific tools. Lastly, you will assist in analyzing biological indices of vector populations to identify Integrated Pest Management (IPM) priorities based on potential risks to human health. The Bat Ecologist will be responsible for maintaining permits to conduct bat surveys and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. This role involves working closely with other ecologists, environmental scientists, and clients to ensure the protection and management of bat species, particularly in response to development and conservation projects. This role may also be asked to help or lead on other field efforts. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Client Consultation * Advise clients on bat conservation considerations for site development. * Provide guidance on state and federally protected bat species regulations including permitting, coordination, and mitigation. * Assist clients with the permitting process related to bat conservation, including Section 10 permits. Field Work and Surveys * Conduct presence/absence surveys (as permitted) for bat species using methods such as mist-netting, acoustic monitoring, and other methods. * Identify bat species in the field and in the lab using echolocation call analysis and morphological characteristics. * Conduct roost surveys, emergence counts, and habitat assessments. * Maintain equipment inventory and ensure proper storage and transportation. * Assist with other natural resources project work, as needed. Data Management and Reporting * Tabulate and analyze collected field data using computer software * Analyze acoustic data using bat call analysis software. * Independently prepare technical reports and agency coordination documents. * Submit project reports to various agencies and entities. * Maintain clear communication with project managers, clients, and subcontractors. Project Assistance * Coordinate and manage bat-related projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation. * Support client and agency needs throughout the project lifecycle. * Apply for state or federal permits for T&E species within your expertise. * Ensure all bat survey and monitoring activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including the Endangered Species Act. * Stay updated on regulatory changes and best practices in bat ecology and conservation. * Communicate with field technicians, team and field crew leads, and project managers, providing updates on project progress and addressing technical questions related to bat field survey. * Ensure that all fieldwork and project activities follow approved study plans and federal and state protocols. * Work with clients to ensure project goals align with regulatory requirements and conservation objectives. * Prepare and submit proposals. Requirements Minimum Qualifications: * Education: B.S./B.A. degree in natural science field of study * Minimum of 5 years of experience in bat ecology, including field survey techniques and data analysis. Yes County Chautauqua Street Address Dunkrik Fisheries Research Station City Dunkrik StateNY Zip Code14048 Duties Description Support Lake Erie Unit staff with field sampling and data collection, serve as the primary deckhand aboard the R/V Argo, and will supervise sampling if needed. Additional duties include maintaining the Unit's vessels, vehicles, equipment, and facilities. Other responsibilities include organizing requests for samples from outside investigators, specializing in fish age determination, training new staff according to established standard operating procedures, and participating in data entry/quality assurance for the Unit's array of databases. This position will also assist with annual report preparation and review and attend public functions as needed. Occasional operation of smaller vessels to accomplish field work will be on an as needed basis. Other field and lab work will be assigned as needed. Experience with power and hand tools is beneficial for this position. Will supervise lower level staff. Minimum Qualifications Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program. Substitution: one year of college coursework including at least 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or a related field, may substitute for one year of the experience described. Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2027, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Must have certification to operate motorized boats or personal watercrafts at time of appointment.
