Gender Pay Gap In Georgia

Tuesday, April 4th, 2017. That's the next Equal Pay Day -- a day that symbolizes how long into the year it takes women to earn what men earned in the previous year. A perfect symbol of the gender pay gap in America.

But what about Georgia? And what if you are just starting your career? How pervasive is the problem then?

That's what we set out to answer by looking at the most recent PUMS data from the US Census. And the short answer is 75% of the 60 professions we examined have a gender pay gap that favors men for millennials, the people between ages 19 and 35 in 2014 when the data was collected. Even the jobs that do pay millennial women relatively more, don't really pay them more in absolute terms. For example, women Residential Advisors (Think RAs on college campuses) may get paid 98% more then their male counter parts, but that's only because they make $7,220 compared to $3,683 for men.

For all the that has changed since your grandparent's generation, gender pay inequality continues to be an issue in Georgia.

Read on to see how we analyzed the data, more information on the professions with the most and least inequality in pay for millennials, and a ranking of the jobs that actually have a gender pay gap that favors women.

How We Identified The Jobs With The Most And Least Pay Inequailty In Georgia

In order to perform this analsysis, we gathered data directly from the source: The Bureau of Labor Statistics, specifically the PUMS (Public Use Microdata Sample) data set for all 109 job classifications in Georgia. This particular dataset gives researchers access to a 1% random sample of the person level Census Data in each state. We can then generalize this information to the general population with a given level of certantity.

Using the most recent data available, the year 2014, we compared average annual salaries for every profession with a sample size over 20. This whittled down the number of viable professions to 60 from 109.

We then computed the ratio between average salaries for women and men and sorted them from the few where the gender gap favored women to the ones with the largest pay gap. In other words:

Pay Gap = Women's Annual Wage / Men's Annual Wage

It's important to note that we only looked at average annual salary which will not take into account important factors like number of hours worked that may vary between gender.

Sales and Management Penalize Women

A few important patterns emerge from this data.

Sales jobs, whether in retail, services, or manufacturing, consistently have a significant gender pay gap.

Additionally, Management and professional jobs , whether in Sales, Law, Operations, or Finance, also seem to have a consistenly high gender pay gap.

Take, for example, Lawyers and Judges. This profession has the highest aveage salary for millennial men in the dataset, yet women's pay lags behind by a whopping 36%.
