How We Determined the Best Job Markets in Illinois

To analyze the job markets in Illinois, we utilized the latest data from the Census American Community Survey, focusing on metropolitan areas with a civilian workforce of over 5,000.

While the unemployment rate is a key indicator, it only tells part of the story. Therefore, we evaluated several factors to provide a more comprehensive ranking of job markets in Illinois.

Each metropolitan area was ranked from 1 to 213 across four categories:

  • Unemployment Rate
  • Change in Unemployment Rate
  • Household Income Change
  • Current Average Household Income

In each category, a lower score indicates a better job market. For instance, Chatham village had the lowest unemployment rate, earning it the top spot for that metric. We averaged the rankings across all categories to produce our final list, with lower scores indicating stronger job markets.
