Find a Job You Really Want In
How do you define the “worst jobs” out there?
Is it a job that makes your work 100 hours a week? Or one that’s so boring you’d rather be doing anything else?
Maybe it’s one that makes you watch the White Sox play everyday.
Well, at Zippia, we let the numbers be our guide to determining the best jobs from the worst jobs. We collected data about various criteria people like about their job and then figured out which jobs had the least of the things people like.
These aren’t touchy-feely ideas like “making a difference” or “being valued by the company”. We can’t adequately quantify feelings, so we stick to the hard numbers.
After the dust settled on our keyboards and data mainframes, we were were left with this set of the ten jobs that are the worst of the worst in Chicago:
- Fitness Trainers and Aerobics Instructors — $35,770

How We Calculated The 100 Worst Jobs In Chicago
In order to find the worst jobs in Chicago, we went to the ultimate source of job statistics, the BLS and their online database buddy, ONet.
Trust me, it takes a certain kind of crazy to dive into those numbers, and I’m not sure I made it out in one piece.
Once we had the data, we looked at the following for each of the 647 job titles available:
- Average Annual Salary — The higher paying, the better
- Entry Level Pay (10th Percentile Salary) — You can be new to your job and still get paid well
- Job Availability — All else equal, more jobs mean more chances to snag one
- Education required — The lower the bar on education, the more people can do it
We then ranked each job across each criteria from 1 to 647, with 1 being the worst.
Finally, we averaged the ranks across each criteria to create a Zippia Worst Job Score. The job with the lowest Zippia Worst Job Score has to be the worst job that Chicago has to offer.
