How We Determined the Best Work-Life Balance Cities in California
Achieving work-life balance hinges on key elements such as happiness, satisfaction, and time management. Individuals who successfully navigate their professional and personal lives often enjoy fulfilling careers while dedicating ample time to activities that bring them joy.
To identify the cities that exemplify these qualities, we established the following criteria based on the American Community Survey:
- Commute time (Shorter is better)
- Weekly hours worked (Shorter is better)
- Household size (Larger is better)
- Unemployment rate (Lower is better)
- Poverty rate (Lower is better)
- Leisure activities per capita (Higher is better)
In essence, if you can minimize your commute, work fewer hours, and enjoy a supportive family environment, you’re on the right track to achieving work-life balance. Additionally, cities that provide ample recreational opportunities and maintain a healthy job market are essential for fostering a balanced lifestyle. To evaluate each city, we incorporated data on local amenities from sources like Yelp, as well as metrics on unemployment and poverty levels.
Each city was ranked from one to 66 based on the established criteria, with a rank of one indicating the best performance in a particular category. We then calculated the average rank across all criteria, awarding the title of “Best Work-Life Balance City in California” to the location with the lowest overall score.
