How We Determined the Best Job Markets in Alabama

Utilizing the latest data from the Census American Community Survey, we analyzed Alabama’s metro areas, focusing on cities with a civilian workforce exceeding 5,000. While the unemployment rate is a key indicator, it is just one piece of the puzzle in understanding a local job market.

We ranked each metro area from 1 to 56 based on four critical factors:

  • Unemployment Rate
  • Change in Unemployment Rate
  • Household Income Change
  • Current Average Household Income

A lower score in each category indicates a more favorable job market. For instance, Mountain Brook held the lowest unemployment rate at 1.88%, securing its position as the top market. The overall scores across the four categories were averaged to compile our final rankings.
