Discover the Most Popular Anime in Each State

If you’re an anime enthusiast, there’s likely at least one film or series that you cherish enough to passionately defend in spirited debates on social media. Whether you’re seeking kindred spirits or simply curious about regional preferences, your own state might have some surprising anime favorites.

In Japan, the term “anime” encompasses all forms of animation. However, outside of Japan, particularly in English-speaking countries, “anime” specifically refers to animated shows and films originating from Japan or heavily influenced by Japanese animation styles. For instance, “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” while an American production, is often categorized as anime due to its distinct anime-inspired art and storytelling.

Anime’s appeal extends far beyond Japan, boasting a massive following in Western countries, particularly in the United States. There’s something uniquely captivating about immersing yourself in a world where dramatic battles and fantastical elements unfold across episodes, making anime a perfect escape into narrative adventures.

Ever found yourself wondering if different states have distinct anime preferences?

We conducted an exploration into this very question, mapping out the most searched anime titles across the United States.

For example, “Neon Genesis Evangelion” enjoys significant popularity along the West Coast, while in Virginia, “Fullmetal Alchemist” stands out, a fitting choice given that alchemy is part of the curriculum in some public schools.

In contrast, the Square States and Southern coast showcase a more diverse range of tastes. Coloradans are drawn to “Black Bullet,” while folks in Nebraska lean toward “Nisekoi,” and Louisianans are intrigued by the uniquely stylish “Kill la Kill.”

However, the standout favorite across many states is undoubtedly “Naruto,” with its iconic spiky-haired ninja making appearances from Texas to Kentucky and even reaching as far as Arizona. Our map categorizes states into Naruto and Non-Naruto favorites, ideal for anyone planning a trip with an anime twist.

How We Determined This

We utilized Google Trends, a powerful tool that allows users to analyze the popularity of search terms across different regions.

For instance, searching for “Naruto” and examining the U.S. map reveals that Texas has the highest search volume for this title.

By inputting over a hundred search queries into Google Trends, we identified which anime are most sought after in each state, using data from the past five years. This analysis led to the creation of our informative map. We included popular series as well as notable anime films, such as Studio Ghibli’s “Spirited Away.”

Below, we’ve highlighted the top anime for each state, along with a few additional contenders that didn’t make the cut. “Naruto” consistently emerged as the favorite across many states, with “Fullmetal Alchemist” and “Dragon Ball Z” following closely behind.
