Swipe left for slideshow. Article continues below.

Sacramento is known for its vibrant culture, diverse activities, and robust economy, consistently ranking as one of the top places to live in the United States. However, city life isn’t for everyone. Many individuals prefer the quieter surroundings of the suburbs.

This raises an important question: do the suburbs surrounding Sacramento offer the same appeal as the city itself?

In this article, we will analyze data to identify which Sacramento suburbs might need some improvement—essentially, the areas that fall short of the high standards set by Sacramento proper. While it’s unrealistic to expect every suburb to match the city’s charm, some suburbs, like Gold River, certainly try their best.

We assessed the 32 largest suburbs of Sacramento to pinpoint the least desirable places to live. Although these suburbs may not rank among the worst in the state of California, they do lag behind in terms of quality of life:

  1. Lemon Hill
  2. North Highlands
  3. Rio Linda
  4. Florin
  5. Rancho Cordova
  6. Rosemont
  7. Foothill Farms
  8. Elverta
  9. Citrus Heights
  10. Parkway

How We Identified the Least Desirable Sacramento Suburbs

To evaluate the livability of each suburb, we focused on the factors that people generally value. We established criteria based on the most recent available data to ensure comprehensive and accurate results. Using the latest American Community Survey data from 2020-2022, we focused on the following criteria:

  • High unemployment rates
  • Low median income
  • Low population density
  • Low home values
  • High dropout rates from high school

Each suburb with a population over 5,000 was ranked according to these criteria from least to most favorable. The suburb with the lowest average ranking across these factors is deemed the least desirable.
