New Orleans during Marti Gras, crawfish, and soul food are the first things that come to mind for me when I think of Louisiana.

But as we all know, there’s more to a place then the stereotypical ideas that come to mind. Over four million people live in Louisiana and what do they think of when they got up in the morning? Their job.

So, here at Zippia, we took it upon ourselves to help people find what parts of Louisiana are the best places to get a job. Using our standard analytic process to separate the A places from everywhere else, we aim to help people thinking of relocation to Louisiana find the best place to land a job.

After crunching all the numbers, we were left with this set of the best places to get a job in the Bayou State:

  1. Prairieville
  2. Gonzales
  3. Denham Springs
  4. Shenandoah
  5. Oak Hills Place
  6. Chackbay
  7. Old Jefferson
  8. Zachary
  9. Eden Isle
  10. Village St. George

How We Determined The Best Places For Jobs In Louisiana

We first researched detailed data on 474 places in Louisiana. However, in order to properly compare places in an apples-to-apples manner, we set a minimum population threshold of 5,000 people.

This left us with 108 places in Florida to analyze.

We then ranked each place across a number of criteria from one to 108, with one being the best.

We took the average rank across all criteria, with the place posting the lowest overall score being crowned the winner of the title “Best Place For Jobs In Louisiana”.

The criteria we looked at were:

  • Unemployment rate
  • Recent job growth
  • Future job growth
  • Sales tax
  • Median household income

Sources of criteria include the the BLS and Sperling’s Best Places.

If your city or town isn’t among the top 10, jump down to the bottom of the post to see a detailed chart and a downloadable file of all the data.

Prairieville can be considered Pleasantville when it come to getting a job, it offers the best shot at landing a well paying in job in all of Louisiana.

It has the third highest household median income of any place in Louisiana. And when you combine that with the fifth best recent job growth and prospects for future job growth, it’s clear that Prairieville is the clear cut favorite in the Pelican State.

2. Gonzales

Population: 9,837
Unemployment Rate: 3.80%
Median Household Income: $48,095

Gonzales may be known as the “Jambalaya Capital of the World”, but it’s also busy cooking up jobs as it ranks as the second best place in Louisiana.

This suburb of Baton Rouge boasts the same statistics as Prairieville, just with a household median income about 40% lower.

But with an unemployment rate of 3.8%, I don’t think anyone will be complaining any time soon.

3. Denham Springs

Population: 10,212
Unemployment Rate: 3.80%
Median Household Income: $46,602

In what you’ll quickly notice is becoming a pattern, Denham Springs, another suburb of Baton Rouge, ranks as the third best place for jobs in Louisiana.

Because of their proximity to Baton Rouge, these first three places all just battled it out on the household median income front. Denham Springs happened to finish in third with a median household income of “only” $46,602.

4. Shenandoah

Population: 18,774

Median Household Income: $94,893

Being even closer to Baton Rouge has it perks — it probably means you earn more.

And Shenandoah doesn’t want to buck that stereotype, its residents have the second highest median household income of anyone in Louisiana.

So while the unemployment rate is a tick higher than the first three places on the list, you won’t mind landing a job here.

5. Oak Hills Place

Median Household Income: $84,872

Oak Hills couldn’t beat out its larger neighbor on the list of best places in Louisiana to get a job.

And while a $84,000 a year in median household income would be good enough for most places, it’s just not enough to topple Shenandoah.

6. Chackbay

Population: 5,918
Unemployment Rate: 2.90%
Median Household Income: $64,786

Chackbay ranks as the sixth best plaec to get a job in LOousisana and is a bit of oddity. I say that because most places on our list of the best for jobs are clear suburbs of a city. And while New Orleans is close to Chackbay, I’d only go so far as to call Chackbay an out-burb.

All that being said, this town has everything you’d want — the lowest unemployment rate in the state and a top 10% median household income.

It didn’t place higher because of its lackluster recent job growth.

7. Old Jefferson

Old Jefferson takes us back to the ‘burbs around Baton Rouge with a seventh place finish.

Similar to its neighbors, the job market is excellent here, it just has a slightly lower median household income.

8. Zachary

Zachary was saved by the bell when it comes to jobs. It managed to crack into the top ten with an eighth place finish.

Eden Isle is a Garden of Eden when it comes to jobs in Louisiana — it takes the ninth spot in our analysis.

Right off the Gulf, this city has one of the highest median household incomes in the land. Combine that with an incredibly low unemployment and you have a job haven… or heaven.
