Weight inspector job description


Overview:
The Senior Agricultural/Weights and Measures Inspector is responsible for inspecting and enforcing agricultural and weights and measures regulations to ensure the quality and safety of agricultural products and consumer goods.
Responsibilities:

* Inspect orchards, farms, nurseries, mills, apiaries, and plant shipments for agricultural pests and diseases and ensure adequate plant pest quarantine measures are taken. * Monitor pesticide use by commercial applicators, including types of pesticides used and application techniques. * Inspect and enforce agricultural product standards for fruits, vegetables, and eggs. * Inspect produce cases, nursery stock, commodities, and other packaged goods weighing 25 pounds or more. * Inspect, test, seal, or condemn weighing and measuring devices used in commercial transactions. * Inspect shipments for compliance with labeling, weighing, and measuring codes and issue inspection certificates. * Perform test purchases or sales to verify accurate weight or measure. * Gather and compile information and prepare reports, issue citations or violations, and collect appropriate fees. * Maintain records and prepare reports on inspections, pest control activities, and related matters. * Use a variety of hand-held or other equipment, such as refractometers, scales, graduated measures, hydrometers, and laptop or tablet computers. * Receive and provide training in the safe and effective use of various tools and equipment utilized in any inspection, investigation, or enforcement activities. * Use mathematical formulae, including algebra. * Act as a witness in administrative, criminal, and civil cases. * Respond to inquiries and complaints from other agencies and the public.
Qualifications:

* OPTION I: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in one or more appropriate disciplines in agricultural science, biological science, chemical science, physical science, mathematics, and/or statistics -AND- One (1) year of experience at the level of the Los Angeles County class of Associate Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector performing agricultural or weights and measures inspection functions for a public jurisdiction. * OPTION II: A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in any discipline with a minimum of 30 semester units, or equivalent (e.g. 45 quarter units), in one or any combination of the following disciplines: agricultural science, biological science, chemical science, physical science, mathematics, and/or statistics -AND- One (1) year of experience at the level of the Los Angeles County class of Associate Agricultural/Weights & Measures Inspector performing agricultural or weights and measures inspections for a public jurisdiction.
