Duties and Responsibilities:

· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:
· Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by utilizing various forms of complex technology that include surveillance, detection, situation awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.

Grade level eligibility and salaries vary depending upon background, including experience and education, and duty location of the opportunity. Qualifications:

Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Welcome and orient visitors, open and close visitor center, provide information, and show refuge film.
• Participates in the development and management of a high-quality Interpretative Center by orienting and guiding visitors along their trip. Create and present interpretive programs on a variety of Southeast Alaska topics.
• Run the day-to-day operations of the Discovery Center, including checking admission tickets, answering visitor questions, maintaining the grounds, and operating audio-visual equipment.
• Curate interpretive content for exhibits. Maintain museum exhibits.
• Assist with planning and presenting special events and activities within the Discovery Center.
• Assist the Discovery Center's lead ranger with creating programs and activities.
Marginal Duties
While this is a front-country position focused in the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center, we will try our best to offer chances to explore other professions and projects within the Tongass National Forest and with our partners. The following is a list of activities that may be offered based on the participant's interest and schedule.
• Create and present outdoor Interpretative programs at our Ward Lake location.
• Develop content for the Discovery Center's strategic marketing, including updating the Forest's social media streams.
• Assist with Ketchikan Misty Fjords Ranger District events, and activities.
• Participate in local Forest Service employees' research and work.
• Identify potential partnership activities within the local community. Maintain relationships with local partners (such as museums, state and local government, schools, and non-profit organizations).
Required Qualifications
Strong communication and public speaking skills.
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

The bunkhouse includes laundry facilities. Bedding and towels are provided.
Housing is located within walking distance of two grocery stores, a mall, a few restaurants, and a hospital. Outside of the bunkhouse is a bus stop on Ketchikan's public transit system. It takes about 10-15 minutes to navigate to the Discovery Center from the bunkhouse by bus.

This announcement is to fill this excepted service position under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) hiring authority, Public Law 96-487. You must have lived or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of the Tongass National Forest and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the cultural and/or natural resources of the of the Southeast Alaska area to meet eligibility requirements.

* Assures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans.
* Schedules daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans.
* Maintains and cleans developed sites, roadsides, and backcountry dispersed sites.
* Makes repairs to damaged facilities or closes areas of facilities when hazards cannot be promptly eliminated.
* Maintains recreation facilities such as toilets, road closure gates, hand pumps, water systems, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters, and other miscellaneous structures.
* Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas.
* Serves as inspector for recreation area cleanup and maintenance contracts. Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s).
* Serves as a unit fee collection officer. Collects fees, counts, reconciles money collected, and ensures deposits are made appropriately.
* Inspects recreation areas, areas of concentrated public use, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and the management plans, public health, and safety.
* Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action.
* Patrols wilderness to ensure areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with Wilderness Management Plan.
* Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management, and safety.
* Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations.
* Oversees the construction and maintenance of trails. Monitors the condition and use of trails.
* Positions may perform other duties as assigned.

Additional information
This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and may be extended without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.
The salary amount will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). A gradually reducing COLA will continue to be paid after December 31, 2012. COLA will not be eliminated until 65% of the locality pay equals the frozen COLA rate. See the OPM website at: ************************************* for additional information.
The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.
If you are retired from the Federal Government and are selected for this vacancy, your retirement annuity may be offset from your pay.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FINGERPRINT CHECK: Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation.
