Easy ApplyResearch Scientist, Dermatology
Senior principal scientist job in Charlottesville, VA
The Department of Dermatolog y at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine invites applications for a federal-funded Research Scientist position. This role will focus on studying Cancer Biology and Stem Cell Biology in the laboratory of Dr. Lu Le , Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology.
Dr. Le's lab lab investigates how genetic and microenvironmental factors interplay to regulate tumorigenesis. Our research focuses on identification of the cell of origin and elucidating the role of tumor microenvironment in cancer development. We dissect the cellular and molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis from a developmental perspective using Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a common tumor predisposition human genetic disorder, as a model. While working on neurofibromatosis, our research group serendipitously uncovered the identity of follicular epithelial cells that directly give rise to hair and mechanisms that cause hair to turn gray - findings that led to our second focus to identify possible treatments for balding and hair graying associated with aging. Our laboratory offers a rich experimental environment that encompasses both basic and translational research.

Easy ApplyResearch Scientist in Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics-Yang Lab
Senior principal scientist job in Charlottesville, VA
The Yang lab is seeking a research scientist to join their lab. We are located within the Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics Department at the University of Virginia. The research scientist will be responsible for independent research production in their specialty area.
About the Yang Lab: The Yang Lab is dedicated to dissecting the molecular mechanisms of cellular stress response, specifically focusing on mitochondrial stress, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and downstream integrated stress response (ISR). We use an interdisciplinary approach, integrating structural biology (Cryo-EM/Cryo-ET), biochemistry (protein characterization), and cell biology (fluorescent imaging). Our ultimate goal is to modulate those stress response pathways in physiological and pathological conditions, potentially leading to the development of novel therapeutics for related human diseases, including neurodegeneration, metabolic disorders, and cancer. In addition, we have established close collaborations with experts in disease-relevant mouse models to complement our mechanistic findings.
Research Scientists are expected to perform assigned tasks independently. In addition to a firm background in the particular field, Research Scientists should demonstrate the ability to lead small groups and work without additional supervision once objectives are defined and methods of approach are set. As Senior Professional Research Staff, they are not expected to provide formal guidance to students or otherwise participate in the instructional program.
Like all professional staff, Research Scientists are principally engaged in research and appointed to limited terms of employment at the University. This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal (for an additional two, one-year increments) contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.
