The Head Coach will serve as a mentor and role model, promoting athletic development, academic responsibility, sportsmanship, and teamwork. The ideal candidate will bring strong basketball knowledge, coaching experience, and the ability to positively influence young student-athletes as they transition into competitive athletics. Key Responsibilities: Leadership & Mentorship: Provide vision, leadership, and positive mentorship to middle school student-athletes, instilling values of teamwork, discipline, and respect. Skill Development: Teach basketball fundamentals, strategies, and conditioning appropriate for middle school athletes. Program Management: Plan, organize, and oversee practices, games, and team activities with attention to skill progression and sportsmanship. Compliance & Eligibility: Ensure adherence to OHSAA and Garfield Heights City Schools policies, including academic and eligibility standards. Game Preparation: Develop practice plans, game strategies, and in-game decision-making to support team success. Safety & Supervision: Promote a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment during all practices, games, and travel. Collaboration: Work with athletic staff, school administration, and parents to support the basketball program and the development of student-athletes. Community Engagement: Build strong relationships with families and the Garfield Heights community to encourage program support. Other Duties: Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration. Qualifications: Valid Pupil Activity Permit with the Ohio Department of Education Satisfactory BCI/FBI background checks Previous basketball coaching or playing experience preferred (middle school or higher) Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals and age-appropriate coaching strategies Effective communication and organizational skills Commitment to promoting academic accountability, sportsmanship, and the well-being of student-athletes About Our District: The Garfield Heights City Schools collaboratively and cooperatively serve students and families of the City of Garfield Heights. Essential Functions: Assist the Head Coach in all aspects, as needed. Be a contributing and positive member of the Kenyon Athletic Department AND Student Affairs Division. Represent Kenyon always in a positive and enthusiastic light. Teach the basic fundamentals of the game using a skill set that will complement the head coach's instruction. Other Expectations: Serve as a member of the Athletics, Fitness and Recreation team, responsible for providing leadership, goals, and program implementation at a fully residential campus housing 1800 undergraduate students. Develop and maintain mutually supportive and collaborative working relationships with student affairs colleagues, faculty, and other campus partners to accomplish shared objectives and tasks. Demonstrate a commitment to and compliance with the College's and Department of Athletics, Fitness and Recreation policies and procedures as well as the North Coast Athletic Conference and NCAA constitutions, bylaws, legislation and regulations. Demonstrate a commitment to the Department of Athletics' student-athlete handbook, and the Student Affairs and College's mission statements. Success Factors: Collaborative mindset. Believe in the greater good. Ability to teach basketball fundamentals. Demonstrated support for students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A desire to be competitive and part of a winning program. Working Conditions: Some heavy lifting / moving equipment is required. The working schedule is not traditional nor regular: early morning, day, late evenings, weekends are required, as may be work during college breaks and summers. Travel for athletic contests, recruiting, coaches meetings and convention/caucus attendance is required. The ability to obtain College driver certification is necessary. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required. Demonstrated experience instructing on the rules and fundamentals of the sport. Collegiate playing experience preferred but not required.
