Prepares patient films for interpretation by nuclear medicine physician. Prepares radiopharmaceuticals, calculates correct dosages, and administers treatment to patients as appropriate. Positions and adjusts equipment over the body area to be studied and operates the imaging systems. Performs ordered laboratory tests on body specimens using radioactive substances. Uses quality control techniques to ensure radiopharmaceutical quality and efficient and effective operation of equipment. Uses protective lead shielding and constantly monitors the laboratory with radiation detectors to help safeguard the work surroundings. Recognizes test results which may constitute critical clinical situations and notifies physician immediately as per facility protocol. Recognizes and responds to other patient emergencies according to facility protocol.     The Small Animal Imaging Core (SAIC), in Shared Laboratory Resources, is seeking a Research Associate who will support areas of preclinical multimodal imaging (e.g. MRI, CT, PET, bioluminescence, etc) for research. The successful applicant will have strong knowledge and research background in medical imaging (e.g MRI/MRS, CT, PET, 2D optical, etc), experience in programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, AFNI, 3D Slicer, etc), and expertise in imaging processing & analysis. They will report to the SAIC Core Director and will be responsible for reporting progress to the PI on imaging experiments and data analysis. Examples of investigator research interests include but are not limited to: Cancer, Heart & Vascular, Inflammation, Neurological & Vision Major Duties/Responsibilities: * Support and collaborate with internal and external researchers on related projects that involve imaging. * Develop foundational imaging acquisition pipelines and imaging research capabilities for various research projects in areas of e.g. neurological disease, cancer biology, cardiovascular disease, etc. * Develop efficient computing algorithms and integrate, implement, and deploy image data processing and analyses workflows for the facility and research labs. * Write peer reviewed papers and technical reports. * Participate in conferences and contribute to facility and PI grant proposal development. Basic Qualifications: * Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics or a related field. * Postdoctoral level - requires a minimum of 1 years' experience in a biomedical research laboratory; Research Associate Level - requires a minimum of 5+ years' experience in a biomedical research laboratory; does not include doctoral work experience. * Familiarity with medical clinical/preclinical medical imaging, e.g. metabolic imaging, MRI, PET/CT, perfusion modeling, optical imaging and validation methods * Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. * Excellent written and oral communication skills. * Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment. * Basic programming skills; familiarity with medical imaging software's utilized for data processing and image analyses. Assure preventive maintenance/service completed for PET/CT equipment and auxiliary imaging support equipment used in support of PI protocol imaging services. + Provide technical support and assist PI, as applicable, with micro PET/CT imaging protocol development for PI IACUC protocol that requires small animal PET or CT imaging. + Work with radioactive materials and follow all small animal PET imaging operation protocols to assure compliance with EHSO required safety guidelines for survey documentation, use, handling, and disposal of radioactive materials for core service line operations. + Assure compliance with all IACUC/DAR regulations/policies for core's MicroPET/CT service line and serve as point of contact for annual IACUC inspections for core's service line and equipment. Keep detailed log of each completed PI study scan with all required IACUC/EHSO documentation for audit/compliance purposes. + Coordinate and complete small animal PET/CT imaging appointments for onboarded PI studies. + Maintain service line supply inventory. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: + Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and four years of research experience, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: + Experience with animal imaging processes/procedures and experience operating animal PET/CT imaging equipment, or similar technical imaging equipment. + Experience with PET data reconstruction and DICOM file analysis. + Four years of animal research support experience, preferably working with small animal (rodent) research. + Knowledge of IACUC guidelines that govern pre-clinical research or ability to quickly acquire and apply this knowledge. + Experience working with radioactive material and knowledge of radiation safety protocols. The Department of Radiology maintains an excellent academic environment with a strong commitment to research and teaching in a wide range of disciplines. The fellowship will combine clinical PET training with the potential for protected research time and an opportunity to work with novel PET radiotracers among many other clinical and research possibilities. Clinical duties may include on-call responsibilities as well as additional duties covering a nuclear medicine service at one of the teaching institutions of Emory. Radionuclide therapy procedures using non-sealed sources are part of nuclear medicine clinical responsibilities. A new purpose designed theranostic center is opening at Emory University Hospital Midtown in the summer of 2023 integrated with a multi-disciplinary GI/GU clinic. For the qualified candidate, there may be an option to create a personalized program, which could include body imaging as well as general and cardiac nuclear medicine rotations. An option for a second year of fellowship experience may also be considered at the discretion of the Fellowship Director and Division Director. There are 9 full time physicians in Nuclear Medicine. There are also 12 dedicated research faculty including 11 PhDs and 1 MD among six translational and basic science laboratories. The equipment at the Emory University affiliated nuclear medicine departments includes state-of-the-art imaging and computer systems. Each institution has several imaging systems including SPECT and SPECT/CT and specialized computer facilities. Emory has a PET Center, including two PET/CT scanners and a PET/MR as well as PET/CTs at Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory St. Josephs Emory Johns Creek, Grady Memorial Hospital, and the VA Medical Center. Additional research instruments include dedicated research PET/CT, a micro PET/CT preclinical scanner, a multispectral in-vivo fluorescence imaging system, and a cyclotron located in a new research building. Research opportunities are available for fellows in both clinical and basic research; research is required and is tailored to the individual's long-term goals. Research facilities include state-of-the-art cyclotron and radiochemistry services, animal imaging research laboratories utilizing PET-CT and a wide variety of other resources. The Division is integrally involved in research conducted by Emory University School of Medicine faculty, including close collaboration with colleagues in Radiology, Cardiology and the Winship Cancer Institute. Currently, there are active clinical research programs involving new PET and single-photon radiotracers, therapeutics, Y-90 microsphere therapy, and many other projects involving translational medicine.
