Position: Stitcher Operator
Reports to: Director of Manufacturing Operations

Essential Function: The Stitcher Operator is responsible for operating stitching machines, producing high quality printing jobs, to meet customer and company expectations, in a cost-effective manner while meeting strict deadlines.
Experience:
Minimum 3 to 5 years' experience operating stitching equipment in a print environment.

Position Specific Skills & Competencies:
Follow team leader instructions for Bindery processes
Operating knowledge of stitching machines, including troubleshooting
Ability to set up various book sizes, including 3, 5 and 6 pockets plus cover feeder and 4th and 5th knives.
Perform daily, monthly, and quarterly maintenance on stitching equipment
Keep jobs and production floor clean and organized
Ability to sit, stand, and/or walk for prolonged periods of time
Ability to push/pull loaded pallet jacks and/or rolling carts
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and 75 pounds on occasion
Communicate any job specifics issues or other pertinent information regarding jobs to the next shift, if necessary

About the Role:
As a Folding Gluing Operator, you will be responsible for independently setting up, adjusting, and operating folding gluer equipment to produce high-quality product according to specifications. In this role, you will:
Set up feeder, glue system, plow/fold plates, compression sections, pack station, and quality inspection systems.

About You:

Inspect equipment for safety issues
May operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) that contain numerous interrelated process stations that are fed collated sheets or signatures and perform such functions as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering and delivering or stacking completed books, magazines or catalogs
Make needed adjustments to coordinate the multiple work stations on a single machine
Monitor quality, output and productivity
Qualifications
Familiarity with different paper weights, sizes, kinds and colors so as to be able to identify paper conditions (i.e. excessive moisture or curling that frequently requires additional machine adjustment)
Familiarity with basic mathematics (i.e. decimals, metric units) to understand dimensional requirements contained in job orders and to make more complicated adjustments
Ability to use the full range of standard and specialized tools and devices to adjust and maintain the functional accuracy and operating conditions of the bindery machines
Skill in making adjustments to powered machines using handtools (i.e. wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives) as well as more specialized hand tools, usually furnished by the machine manufacturer
Ability to read and interpret written work which indicates the number and sequence of machine operations required to complete the work and maintain dimensional accuracy in accordance with instructions provided
Knowledge of operating procedures for bindery equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, binding/gluing machines

Additional Information
The rate of pay for this role at the noted RRD location is $19.50 to 20.00/ hour. Typically, roles follow step progressions to a target rate or set increments over time. Requirements:
The Perfect Binder Operator will operate a soft-cover Kolbus Binder with fully integrated quality control features:
Signature Recognition, Thickness Calipers on each feeder and Mill Unit, Skewed Signature Detection, Miss and Double Detection at the Cover Station, and Cold Back Book Rejection.
Responsibilities:
Read, understand, and follow job instructions to setup perfect binder according to book makeup, height, width, and thickness.
Gather and collate multiple pages and/or signatures for in-feed.
Ensure quick and timely set up of bindery equipment.
Operate and adjust milling and spine bindery preparation station.
Operate and adjust side and spine, bindery gluing units.
Operate and adjust the control module for each station.
Operate and adjust bindery delivery and lay-down section.
Operate and observe machines to detect malfunctions throughout the production run.
Follow and comply with all company Quality Control procedures and policies to ensure acceptable work.
Ability to select, inspect, compare, and confirm customer samples.

The Perfect Binder Operator will operate a soft-cover Kolbus Binder with fully integrated quality control features:
Signature Recognition, Thickness Calipers on each feeder and Mill Unit, Skewed Signature Detection, Miss and Double Detection at the Cover Station, and Cold Back Book Rejection.
Responsibilities:
Read, understand, and follow job instructions to setup perfect binder according to book makeup, height, width, and thickness.
Gather and collate multiple pages and/or signatures for in-feed.
Ensure quick and timely set up of bindery equipment.
Operate and adjust milling and spine bindery preparation station.
Operate and adjust side and spine, bindery gluing units.
