Equip. We remove barriers and create access to outdoor experiences. POSITION SUMMARY An Outdoor Educator is a part-time employee who will report to the Youth Program Manager. They will lead or assist in all programming and activities for Venture Outdoors, ensuring successful, professional, and excellent experience for all youth participants. This staff member acts as a Venture Outdoors representative to promote the organization's mission. An Outdoor Educator leads on-site lessons and activities with groups, such as hiking, flat water paddling, biking, geocaching, STEM experiments, teambuilding activities, fishing, and more. Must be available at least 2 week days per week. Core working hours are Monday through Friday between 8:30 AM - 6:30 PM. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Create and gather outing and lesson specific program materials when necessary; Check in on campers, provide snack, communicate with parents when necessary; Scout routes and camp areas prior to leading/assisting on trips; Lead summer camp activities for youth aged 5-18; Ensure participants' safety, fun and complete satisfaction; Lead group introductions and manage expectations before the outing; Work with staff to develop and implement engaging new lesson plans for youth outdoor education; Attend professional development trainings; Manage participant behavior, implement a discipline and reward system; Share educational concepts, including natural history, cultural, historical information, and environmental knowledge with participants on outings; Monitor environmental conditions (high water, storms, lightning, heat, cold, etc.) before and during an outing; Care for participants' needs, handle emergencies and contingencies; Ensure all relevant paperwork is completed and returned to the office in a timely manner including participant evaluations, risk waivers, final trip reports, etc.; Be familiar with and follow all Venture Outdoors trip leader guidelines. QUALIFICATIONS Experience working with youth, preferably in an informal education setting; Desire to lead, motivate, and manage groups of varying ages, abilities, and backgrounds; Demonstrated ability to manage logistics in an organized fashion; Willingness to be flexible with work assignments and roles; Knowledge of or interest in the skills and equipment for leading outdoor recreation activities; Comfort speaking in front of a group; Ability to work well independently and be a part of a team Dedicated and committed to the mission of Venture Outdoors Experience working with youth with disabilities is a plus REQUIREMENTS At least 18 years of age; A reliable form of transportation (car, bus, bike) to get you and the necessary equipment to the activity site for in-person trips and lessons; PA Child Abuse background check, PA Criminal History background check, and FBI Fingerprinting (must be acquired prior to hiring; a finding on the criminal background clearances is not automatic disqualification, but rather a conversation starter); Current CPR and First Aid certifications (can acquire upon hiring); Mandated Reporter Training (can acquire upon hiring); Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or religious/medical exemption Once hired, an Outdoor Educator will attend Venture Outdoors' Outdoor Leadership Training and any activity-specific training to accomplish the position, including biking, fishing and kayaking. This is a public-facing position, interfacing with Preserve's donor community, supporting education activities and serving as the organization's link to science and research initiatives as well as academic relationships. Additionally, the position is a hands-on role, responsible for directing invasive plant management programs and specific land stewardship activities at the Preserve. The ideal candidate is credentialed, has a passion for native plants of the Mid-Atlantic region, ecology and conservation, and is fulfilled by meaningful public interactions. The curator reports to the executive director. Responsibilities AAM-Accredited Museum Plant Collection and Living Plant Collection: Manage the accessioning, evaluation, inventorying, labeling and monitoring of the Museum Plant Collection with emphasis on rare, threatened and endangered (RTE) species of local provenance to establish viable populations within the Preserve Plan and execute the seed and plant intake process of wild populations within the Northern Piedmont (Level III Ecoregion) for addition to the Preserve's Living Plant Collection Update and maintain the comprehensive plant records database and GIS mapping system Lead 2026-2027 American Alliance of Museums (AAM) reaccreditation process Build and implement the annual departmental budget and collections enhancement, protection and management plan to optimize financial and material resources Prepare a plant catalog and report of curatorial activities annually for accreditation, board and staff review Native Plant Nursery (in collaboration with the nursery manager): Establish nursery processes to properly collect, document and propagate native plant material for collections purposes Perform hands-on nursery propagation and/or obtain appropriate native plant material through partner organizations and vendors to expand and enhance the collections Retain appropriate accessioned plant material for reserve collections stock purposes Land Stewardship (in collaboration with grounds management staff and volunteers): Manage all aspects of the identification and control of invasive plants using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) best practices Ensure compliance with state and federal laws governing the use of chemical pesticides and maintain active pesticide applicator licensure for direct pesticide application Oversee the care of special habitat areas such as meadows and ponds, utilizing appropriate equipment such as the Preserve's Kubota tractor, zero turn mower, skid steer and others as needed Direct all aspects of deer control, including leading seasonal deer drives, applying deer repellant in sensitive areas and working with third party deer cull organizations, USDA and PA Game commission to remove deer legally and safely Serve as point of contact for internal and external scientific initiatives and data-collecting activities relating to IPM, phenology, environmental health and climate change, using shared data to inform management recommendations Provide project management for medium- to large-scale planting and landscape renovation projects Support limited hazard tree removal and trail maintenance managed the PA Dept. of Conservation & Natural Resources, grounds management staff and volunteers Community Engagement: Establish and cultivate relationships with government entities, organizations and private landowners to identify and obtain native plant material through offsite collection Steward academic relationships and partnerships in science and research Represent the Preserve externally through professional symposia and partner organization initiatives Recruit, educate, train and support volunteers to assist with collections, inventories and invasive plant removal efforts Lead the Preserve's Collections Committee and serve as key member of senior staff leadership team Support limited Preserve fundraising initiatives and education programs managed by their respective departments Other duties as assigned Requirements Master's degree in botany, curation, plant science or related field Minimum of five years of work and field experience Possess or obtain an active P.A. pesticide applicator's license Extensive knowledge of native plants of the Mid-Atlantic region Conversant in ecological principles to audiences of all sizes Excellent people skills High attention to detail Excellent computer skills are strongly preferred, especially database management Valid driver's license with clean driving record Experience with motor vehicles and equipment, including tractors & attachment, mowers, skid steer and dump truck Ability to lift 50 lbs. and to perform strenuous physical tasks in all weather and temperature conditions Work Schedule This is a permanent full-time position with occasional weeknight, weekend and holiday work as needed. This position is primarily operations management, scheduling, training and supervision of staff during all events. The manager is required to work a flexible work schedule including weekends and late nights. Job Primary Responsibilities: Manager is the key Museum staff member during an event, ensuring the safety and security of all employees, visitors and contractors. Works as the liaison between upper management, partners, outside contractors and clients. Responsible for coordinating all planning, set-up, clean-up etc. for events including external, donated and internal events. Manage third party catering and bar service contractual agreements and on site workers. Accepts reservations, including credit card payments for special events. Orders and maintains supplies as needed within budget constraints. Maintains reports of all special events as needed by the Senior Manager of Visitor Services, the Finance Department, and other museum staff. Ensures museum and grounds are returned to pre-event condition and ensure any contractors fulfill contractual obligations. Staff Assists in the recruitment and training of part-time staff. Coach and discipline employees in line with employee handbook and Collective Bargaining Unit requirements. Scheduling, training and supervision of all Event and Birthday staff. Creates full-time & part-time staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage. Approves payroll in line with created schedules. Ensures staff perform tasks in a timely manner, and ensuring quality that will reflect on the success of the event. Other Responsibilities: Ensures knowledge and preparedness to respond to issues that may arise relating to facilities, security, safety, staffing, catering, cleaning and contractors. Customer service interaction and customer service management issues and decisions including accident/incident reports before, after and during events. Works with Visitor Services management to cross train staff and allow for employee sharing within the department. Follows appropriate security measures. Follows and implements Museum policies and procedures.
