Job Summary

The Manager, Application Engineering manages a team of Application Developers to ensure that application development team supports, enforces, and integrates best practices and technology standards across the enterprise. The Manager, Application Engineering understands IT priorities and technological challenges, aligns team resources appropriately, develops solutions, and ensures project completion.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure that project and department milestones and goals are met

• Interview, select and train new employees

• Lead team through obstacles and time constraints to overcome barriers and successfully deliver results

• Responsible for day-to-day tactical team decisions

• Work with direct reports to collaboratively establish development plans

• Provide employee feedback through regular check-ins and writing and delivering performance reviews

• Participate in PI and sprint planning to establish agreed upon delivery schedule

• Establish and enforce software development standards

• Coordinate work with the enterprise architecture team

• Stay abreast of current technology trends and capabilities shaping functional area and incorporate findings into recommendations and strategic planning

• Approve architectural and technical documentation prior to project development initiation when appropriate

• Drive entrepreneurial attitudes within the development team that seek out areas of programmatic and automation improvement

• Evaluate and assign Service Desk tickets and escalate to IT leadership where appropriate

• Assist with team budgeting

• Perform code check in and create all required documentation prior to production releases

• Monitor production releases and ensure appropriate staffing levels are available for support

o PLATFORMS & TOOLS: Microsoft Software Development Stack & other Office tools, Postman, Fiddler, AZURE DevOps

o Concepts (design patterns, data structures): N-Tier Architecture, Object Oriented Programming, RESTful API’s, Strategy Pattern, MVC, Relational Database Design, Inversion of Control

o Data Stores: SQl Server, RavenDB, Excel spreadsheets, CSV files

o JS Frameworks: Angular, Sencha

• Strong knowledge of the P&C insurance industry

• Knowledge of IT Controls and SOX Compliance

MathWorks is seeking a manager to lead our team of customer-facing application engineers that focus on computational finance. The team works with financial companies to understand their technical challenges and propose solutions that use MathWorks software. They support various segments, including asset management, risk analysis, actuarial, and economic analysis.

Day-to-day activities for the team include customer meetings, delivering technical presentations, demoing software, leading software evaluations, and building proof-of-concepts. Internally, the team works closely with Sales, Marketing, and Development on plans and strategy. Success is measured by customer adoption and revenue.

The ideal candidate has management experience, a background in computational finance, and knows MathWorks products. But if you are passionate, we can work with you. This is a pre-sales customer facing role so you must have strong motivation to be customer-facing. Previous customer-facing or pre-sales experience is a plus.

This position is located in Natick, MA. There is an opportunity to travel, mostly to financial hubs such as New York city or Toronto.

As a Manager Application Engineering , you will be responsible for the technical development of software engineering staff within a Discover application development area while using your technical expertise to drive vision into action and results.

  • Guide and drive teams to efficient engineering solutions for achieving iterative business deliverables, this will include but not limited to designing system architecture, writing code or providing out of box solutions with POC.

  • Leads and utilizes highly technical skills to contribute as an engineer within a product team designing, developing code and maintaining quality technology solutions for a product or set of products including developing own subject matter expertise. Demonstrated experience in multiple software languages, modern software methods, CI/CD, cloud, and automated testing.
  • Hire, retain and lead high-functioning, diverse group of engineering professionals, establishing clear objectives and key results, developing consistent set of practices and process across the team, and driving towards resolution of challenging problems. This includes all performance management aspects of leading the engineers including acquiring and providing 360 feedback and administering reviews. Manages software ownership and development from initial concept through continuous improvement.
  • Mentor and lead a staff of engineers in both technical and soft skills to craft a team of highly technically competent, consistent, thoughtful and customer-centric technology experts. This includes ensuring the group is adhering to principles of engineering excellence within their technical domain, applying consistency of technical execution, sharing common practices and challenges within the team, and fostering a culture of excellence and continuous learning within the team.
  • Lead and shape the technical vision within their domain and be an essential member of leadership team including acting as a leader in the Discover engineering community affecting and advancing the architecture across the company and ensuring adherence to all regulatory, compliance and audit requirements. This includes defining how technical work should be done, selecting appropriate tools, defining technology, quality, experience and implementation standards and practices within own technical domain.

Minimum Qualifications
