Marine Spill Response assistant network engineer job description

MSRC is currently looking for an Oiler or Assistant Engineer aboard an Oil Spill Response vessel located in Lake Charles, LA. This position offers a schedule of Monday - Friday with the ability to go home nights and weekends. The Oiler or Assistant Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer in the day-to-day operations, maintenance, and repair of all equipment and systems. This is a dynamic opportunity for a motivated individual to become part of an oil spill response company with a competitive compensation package including great Health Care Benefits with an above average 401(k) savings plan.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This position will require a local candidate who can commute daily, and report back to the vessel within 2 hours to comply with MSRC's emergency response mission.
  • Stand engine room watches as required at sea and during maneuvering
  • Operate systems and equipment in accordance with procedures or as otherwise directed by the Chief Engineer
  • Be familiar with normal and emergency operating procedures for the steering gear, generators, bilge pump, and fire pump.
  • Become familiar with system and equipment emergency operating procedures
  • Assist with Preventive Maintenance, troubleshooting and repair, approved modifications, record keeping.
  • Conduct routine tests and inspections (i.e., lube oil testing, cooling water testing).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess MMC rating of QMED-Oiler (min) or Assistant Engineer (preferred)
  • License endorsements must list endorsements specific to: STCW III/4 RFPEW, BST, as well as QMED-Oiler and Lifeboatman (minimum)
  • Valid USCG medical certificate (STCW) required
  • TWIC card
  • The ability to commute daily, and report back to, the vessel within 2 hours to comply with MSRC's emergency response mission
  • Capable of prolonged, strenuous work onboard vessels at sea
  • Effective leadership and written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to operate industrial equipment and their systems safely
  • Ability to operate a personal computer
  • 40-Hour Hazwoper is desired

TheAssistant Engineerperforms traffic signal timing engineering work including analyzing data, creating calibrated traffic models, developing, implementing, and fine-tuning new signal timing parameters to meet client goals. This position utilizes state of the art tools and data sets to perform engineering work.

What you will be doing:

+ Independently analyze, assess, and interpret data, conditions, and systems to plan and execute traffic signal retiming projects, covering the data collection phase through the project reporting phase

+ Develop and implement strategies for improving arterial traffic flow and safety, prepare the development of system performance measurement tools, standard operating policies/procedures, deficiency reports and mitigation plans, coordinate with local agencies related to the operation and maintenance of traffic signals and arterial systems

+ Use and apply engineering tools available such as TSM&O performance monitoring platforms and signal performance measures (SPM) platforms

+ Interact professionally and respectfully with clients and citizens to ensure high levels of satisfaction

+ Apply and Maintain knowledge of ATMS platforms, controller hardware and software, signal timing optimization software, and analysis software to ensure technical competence

+ Periodically participate in coordination meetings and consults with other staff

+ Closely coordinate with our department groups as needed

+ Travel, as required, to participate in retiming deployments. Length of travel will depend on specific assignments and the successful completion of your responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

This position begins in shipyard (Seattle, WA) over the winter months prior to the summer 2023 Alaska Sailing Season.

The Assistant Engineer is responsible for assisting the Chief Engineer in the maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel systems onboard. The Assistant Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of diesel propulsion and electrical generation systems. Knowledge of support systems such as fuel centrifuges, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, hotel systems, plumbing, refrigeration, heating, and air conditioning.
  • Computer experience: Microsoft programs Excel, Word, and SharePoint are required.
  • Maintain professional demeanor at all times.
  • Must be a self-starter, able to handle multiple tasks, work with little supervision, and work in confined spaces.
  • Crisis management: work well under pressure, act quickly and decisively using sound judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Repair and Maintenance:

  • Perform routine maintenance checks and keeps records of jobs performed. Keeps the Chief Engineer informed of all maintenance and repairs that have been done.
  • Help with engineering, deck, and hotel preventative maintenance programs on daily, weekly, and monthly basis.
  • Complete maintenance and repair tasks as requested by Chief Engineer or Master.
  • Perform hotel maintenance tasks as directed by Chief Engineer or Master.
  • Participate in yearly shipyards.
  • Assist Chief Engineer in all operations and duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer.

Administrative:

  • Update vessel maintenance records for weekly and monthly work items. Assists the Chief Engineer with inventories.

Safety and Security:

  • Follow company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the preparation of the vessel for all U.S. Coast Guard annual dry docks and other inspections.
  • Participate in shore side training as required by the company.
  • Familiar with all duties under the company Safety Management System including Emergency Response Activities.

Communication Skills:

The Assistant Engineer will interact with our passengers daily and must be professional and engaging at all times. Must be able to interpret maritime technical literature and governmental regulations. Must be able to verbalize and write technical information clearly and precisely.

WORK SCHEDULE

During shipyard and dockside maintenance periods, works hours are assigned by the vessel Master or Chief Engineer; these are typically Monday to Friday, 0700-1530. All crew members work 12 hours per day during the sailing season.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Covid-19 - Our crew and guests are fully vaccinated (including booster) prior to boarding the vessels. Masks are also required.
  • Length of Work Shift- Physically able to work 12 hours per day, 7 days a week for 6 to 8 weeks at a time. Rotations off the vessel are usually 2-3 weeks.
  • Mobility- Frequent bending, reaching, twisting, kneeling, crawling, and pushing/pulling. Must ascend and descend stairs and ladders, sometimes while carrying tools or objects. Able to stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Handling/Strength- Able to handle, lift, and lower objects totaling 50 pounds between the ground/deck level to a height of about 4 to 6 feet, and able to repeat these movements. Able to carry these objects up to 100 feet continuously for 20 minutes.
  • Environmental Conditions- Able to work in all weather conditions, around loud noise, in small spaces, and fit through a 28-inch wide hatch.
