What is a cart associate and how to become one

Updated January 8, 2025
3 min read

Cart associates work with everything that includes carts. Their jobs don't just end at being cart pushers, even though that makes up the majority of their job. A cart associate retrieves carts from the parking lot and the wrong places inside the store. They also ensure that the carts are clean, neat, and available for use anytime.

A cart associate's responsibilities may also include loading and unloading semi-trailer trucks delivering packages and assisting customers whenever the need arises. They will also be required to stock shelves and ensure orderly arrangements at all times. This often includes pushing carts. Employers can sometimes require cart associates to market certain things or to stand at the entrance greeting customers.

With a high school diploma, ine can become a cart associate. However, softer skills, like having a positive attitude, great customer service skills, cleaning experience, and the ability to stock shelves are more valuable. Cart associates make an average of $16 per hour and an annual salary of $33,194.
