Kaiser Permanente - Southern California Permanente Medical Group has an opening for the Medical Physics Residency Program in Diagnostic Imaging and Nuclear Medicine. The residency program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP). The program provides structured training and progress assessment in all aspects of clinical medical physics in diagnostic imaging and nuclear medicine, with direct supervision by the medical physics faculty. Training occurs in 15 regional hospitals and affiliated medical offices across Southern California. The curriculum provides comprehensive, mentored, hands-on experience, and progressive responsibility providing the opportunity to work towards becoming fully independent upon completion of the program. The medical physics resident will be expected to work in this training position for 3 years to qualify for both ABR Diagnostic and Nuclear Medical Physics certification exams. Essential Responsibilities: Under supervision, performs acceptance testing on all types of radiological imaging equipment to meet new equipment specifications and baseline image quality assurance metrics. Under supervision, performs radiation dosimetry calculations and computerized data analysis. Under the direction of the Imaging Services Director and Chief of Diagnostic Imaging, performs radiographic diagnostic imaging procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis of disease and injuries. Operates the radiographic equipment to produce radiographic recorded images of the body. Performs technological functions to ensure optimal diagnostic quality of patient care utilizing efficient and safe processes. Essential Responsibilities: Performs specialized and routine diagnostic radiology procedures. Exhibiting a high degree of tact, courtesy, and poise, explains procedures to patient to reduce anxieties and obtain patient cooperation Prepares and positions patient for diagnostic imaging procedures. Adjusts immobilization devices to obtain optimum views of specified area of body requested by physician. Determines exposure factors based on height, weight, portion of body involved, and degree on penetration required. Moves imaging equipment into specified position. Adjusts equipment controls to set exposure factors and produce images of proper detail, density, and accuracy. Operates mobile radiologic equipment in operating room, emergency room, or at patients bedside. Assists radiologists and other qualified physicians who have a valid CA DHS RHB Supervisor Operator Permit for Fluoroscopy in fluoroscopic and special x-ray examinations. Prepares images for reading by radiologist or requesting physician. Processes images and reviews for proper identification and quality control. Performs routine maintenance, diagnoses malfunctions, and makes minor repairs on radiologic equipment, arranging for repairs as needed. Practices radiation protection techniques to minimize radiation to patient and staff. Completes forms and maintains records, logs, and reports of work performed. Orients new hires and trains students. Fills in as necessary in the absence of the Supervising Radiology Technologist. Performs other related duties as necessary. Operates magnetic resonance imaging equipment to produce cross-sectional images (photographs) of patients body for diagnostic purposes. Under the direction of the Chief of Radiology and the Imaging Services Director, with latitude for independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative, performs related technological functions to ensure optimal diagnostic quality of patient care utilizing efficient and safe processes. Essential Responsibilities: Performs patient studies according to set protocol including placing specified coil close to area of interest. Operates imaging and other equipment devices so that quality diagnostic services are provided, including keying commands to specify scan sequences into computer, adjusting transmitters and receivers, and keying in data on keyboard of camera to photograph images. Interviews patient to explain magnetic resonance imaging procedures to address patient concerns and exhibits a high degree of tact, courtesy and poise when interacting with patients, staff, and visitors. Ensures patient and staff safety, including explaining safety protocol, requesting removal of hazardous metal objects, alerting staff of danger or carrying metal around magnet, and monitoring patients via closed circuit TV. Orients new hires and trains MRI Technologist, students, trainees. Trains MRI Technologists I in MRI procedures. May be required to direct, check and train other MRI employees in absence of MRI Supervising Technologist. Perform other related duties as necessary.
