Job Summary

The Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA/CSFA) works as a 1st or 2nd assistant to the surgeon and under the direction and supervision of that surgeon may perform specific significant surgical tasks.

Anticipating the needs of the surgical team, the Certified Surgical Assistant assists the surgeon with tasks such as selecting equipment, set up of various tables and positioning equipment, providing retraction for visualization of surgical site, cauterization of bleeding vessels, suturing and closure of incision, instillation of medications, application of surgical dressings, splints, and casts.

The surgical assistant has responsibilities before, during and after the surgical procedure. The surgical assistant uses effective interdisciplinary communication to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.

Graduate of CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited Surgical Assistant Program required. Graduate of medical school (foreign or domestic) may be substituted for education if currently certified or Credentialed as a Surgical Assistant or Surgical First Assistant issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, or the National Commission for Certification of Surgical Assistants or their successors in lieu of CAAHEP Surgical Assistant Program.

Must obtain Certified Surgical First Assistant or Certified Surgical Assistant certification within 6 months of hire if not available at hire. All current Virginia SAs and applicants must be certified and licensed through the Virginia Board of Medicine.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Determines specific equipment needed for procedures
* Selection and placement of x-rays for reference
* Assists in moving and positioning of patient
* Confirms procedures with surgeon
* Drapes patient with surgeon's guidelines
* Provides retraction of tissue and organs for optimal visualization with regard to tissue type and appropriate retraction instrument and/or technique
* Assists in maintaining hemostasis by direct pressure, use and application of appropriate surgical instrument for the task, placement of ties and suture ligatures, application of chemical hemostatic agents, or other measures as directed by surgeon.
* Clamp, ligation and cutting of tissue per surgeon's directive
* Prepare graft as directed by the surgeon

* Will need to possess the ability to only function within the limits of his/her ability, and within the scope of practice set forth by the medical facility.
* Multi-tasking, ability to work under pressure, must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position

EDUCATION and / or CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:

* High school diploma or equivalent and graduation from a National Surgical Assistant Association approved program.
* Credits and continuing education must be maintained as required by Association of Surgical Assistants.
