About 1 in 5 Houston adults is considered illiterate, experiencing difficulty in completing tasks such as filling out job applications. The goal of the Houston Adult Literacy Project is to build the capacity of adult education and literacy organizations in Houston, which support low income, low literacy adult learners to help them to obtain and grow the skills they need to become self-sufficient and improve their qualities of life. Eight Million Stories provides a network of support for the community though education, job readiness, employment and social/emotional support, that closes the opportunity gap for traditionally under-served youth. In Houston, 111,000 individuals categorized as opportunity youth. The obstacles faced supporting Opportunity Youth in finding pathways to success can be a complex challenge. They lack the exposure and equitable opportunities to transition into career pathways. There is a critical need for communities to provide pathways to opportunity for this population through a formal training program that develops the soft and hard skills that are critical to their success in adulthood. Member Duties : As a Community Engagement VISTA, you will play a vital role in maintaining and strengthening our engagement plan that will support Eight Million Stories' capacity to serve the low-income low-literacy adult population. As a VISTA, you will build capacity by: increasing community engagement and partner site support, strengthening communications strategies, defining communications audiences and constituencies to deliver impactful messages, and staying abreast of literacy initiatives. The VISTA will mobilize local resources to increase the capacity of adult literacy programs to build lasting solutions to poverty.

Entry-Level Transportation/Community Planner (102204)

Our Planning Team works on a variety of community and transportation planning projects and collaborates with a diverse group of planners, engineers, and designers to explore creative outcomes for our clients. You will collaborate on our team to provide a variety of roles including data collection and analysis, GIS mapping, graphic development, planning level analysis, and the development of planning documents. You may also assist our Public Engagement Team with the preparation for or execution of engagement events and activities for our planning projects. This position is based in our Minneapolis office. SRF offers a hybrid work model allowing our staff to work from the office full-time or work part-time in the office and part-time remotely.

Responsibilities:

* Contributing to the development of planning documents, including comprehensive plans, corridor studies, transportation plans, and small area plans.
* Gathering and analyzing a variety of demographic and existing conditions information to understand the current state of a project area or location to inform the process.
* Preparing GIS maps and other graphics to visually represent plan outcomes in an easy-to-read format.
* Participating and contributing to project engagement activities with the public or project team.
* Supporting an open and inclusive planning process.
* Providing creative and resilient solutions and recommendations for our clients.

* Interest in meaningful and inclusive planning processes and outcomes.
* Bachelor's or master's degree in planning, landscape architecture, or similar field.
* 0-2 years' experience.
* Strong written and verbal communications skills.
* Collaborative and enthusiastic attitude.
* Good analytical and critical thinking skills.
* Good organizational skills with attention to detail.

• BA/BS degree or higher in urban planning, geography or a related discipline
• Possess 3+ years of related demonstrated experience in land use planning, land development/entitlements, urban design and/or environmental planning
• Knowledge of the philosophies, principals, practices & techniques of planning
• Excellent communication, organizational, writing and presentation skills
• Ability to cultivate and maintain effective client, interagency and internal team relationships
