The Director of Organ and Tissue Recovery Services role is an exciting opportunity to serve at one of the largest OPOs in the country, and to become part of a high performing, talented leadership team with a department of 50+ staff members. This position will have national presence within the organ and tissue communities and is responsible for the development and execution of strategic and operational plans for tissue recovery and organ preservation. Provides leadership and oversight to the managers/supervisors of the Organ and Tissue recovery services team to ensure high quality procedures, communications, collaborations, and protocols in compliance with Gift of Life, FDA, AATB, OSHA and UNOS standards. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- In conjunction with tissue department leadership oversees all tissue and preservation activities to monitor effectiveness of operations and to maximize organ and tissue donation and research opportunities.
- Creates, maintains, and implements standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with FDA, AATB, OSHA, and UNOS standards. Assures compliance with good tissue and documentation practices.
- Collaborates with the Quality Department to ensure compliance with internal and external standard operating procedures; monitoring and auditing of activities related to all organ preservation and tissue services to maintain highest standards of practice and regulatory compliance; develops and designs systems for standardized reporting and analysis of performance standards to support performance improvement initiatives.
- In collaboration with VP of Organ and Tissue Services: develops innovative strategic plans in alignment with organizational goals to maximize donation, transplant, and research opportunities; develops budgets and manages expenses associated with daily operations of organ, tissue, and preservation services.
- Ensures maintenance of recovery supplies and equipment to be support tissue & organ recoveries 24 hours/day.
- Provides oversight to ensure 24/7 call coverage for all preservation and tissue operations ensuring adequate staffing levels are maintained.
- Responsible for hiring, training, development, performance management, mentoring, and retention of organ and tissue services staff. Collaborate with Clinical Staff Development in the enhancement and implementation of comprehensive educational programs for department staff.
- Ensures clinical competency of staff to include orientation, policy updates, continuing education, and cross-training of intra-departmental roles to include organ preservation, tissue, and eye recovery, surgical first assistant and pulsatile preservation for a department of 50 staff members.
- Routinely monitors individual and department performance, meeting with direct reports on a routine and consistent basis.
- Participates as Tissue Administrator on Call
- Serves as a liaison to GLDP contracted tissue processors and other professional entities such as hospital partners, medical examiners/coroners, and funeral homes.
- Participates in national committees and/or associations to influence national policies and practices.

Requirements:
Education and Experience:
Relevant clinical experience, to include 3-5 years in a leadership capacity and 5-7 years with a Tissue Bank or an OPO. CTBS certification required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies:
- Must possess excellent communication and leadership skills with high levels of maturity, stamina, and self–motivation to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or board of directors.
- Possess an understanding of aseptic tissue procurement, processing, and utilization of allografts
- Have an understanding of the recovery of multiple organs and preservation, as well as solid knowledge of anatomy, sterile technique, and management of an Operating Room environment.
- Be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, legal documents.
- Experience responding to common inquires or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
Work Hours
M-F; 8:30am-5:00pm plus work at any hour of the day if necessary to fulfill job responsibilities. Serves as Tissue AOC providing 24-hour administrative coverage on a rotating basis.
