The company, which mines coal in Pennsylvania, derives its name from the three counties where it originally engaged in mining: Preston County, West Virginia; Bedford County, Pennsylvania; and Somerset County, Pennsylvania. It produces about 2.5 million tons annually. Canadian investment group Sprott Resource had owned about 20% of PBS Coals. In 2008, however, Russian steel company Severstal, looking to supply its own raw materials, bought PBS Coals for about $1.3 billion.
