The Job Opportunity and Duties…

* Supervises correction officers (CO's) and correction sergeants/counselors assigned to one or more posts/areas or special duty (e.g. tool control, armory, count office, mail room, transportation, visitation)
* Instructs and evaluates CO's
* Assigns staff to posts
* Gives post orders
* Assigns staff to unit management posts and outside civilian hospitals
* Ensures CO's and correction sergeants/counselors are alert, attentive and properly placed at their respective posts by inspecting each post
* Conducts surveillance security of institution and property
* Prevents escapes, apprehends escapes, and/or prevents incidents which threaten the security and safety of the facility/inmates/staff or general public which includes when necessary using physical force, unarmed self-defense, firearms and/or other force to detain or secure inmates
* Makes constant rounds to inspect cells, shops, recreation areas, and dining rooms for cleanliness, compliance with safety regulations, possible contraband and general security
* Monitors and directs custody operations during movement of inmates to meals, infirmary, schools, worksites, and other locations
* Arbitrates inmates' disputes and investigates complaints of abuse by Correction Officers', Correction Sergeant/Counselors and/or inmates and refers to investigator if cannot be resolved
* Participates in team approach to unit planning, operation and problem solving; responds to emergencies and security alerts
* Seeks resolution and takes corrective action
* Gathers information and writes reports covering accidents, fires, and employee and inmate's disciplinary actions
* Completes employee and inmate performance evaluations
* Schedules work assignments, inmate moves, meals, educational and recreational activities
* Serves on rules infraction board or other committees as required
* Ensures safety and security of equipment and supplies (e.g., radios, vehicles, restraint devices)
* Makes periodic rounds which involve climbing stairs/ladders, walking, running, crawling, bending, stooping or lifting to ensure orderly movement of inmates

High school diploma or G.E.D.; 2 yrs. trg. or 2 yrs. exp. in enforcement of security measures for detention of felons or consumers who are criminally insane in controlled environment; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in supervisory principles/techniques or providing work direction & training to other employees. if assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of revised code, applicants must also have commercial driver's license.

Juvenile Correctional Lieutenant

JOB SUMMARY:

Positively impact the lives of youth in the care of the Department of Juvenile Justice through the collaborative creation and maintenance of a safe, therapeutic, and educational environment in facilities. Provide support, guidance, and structure for our detained youth by modeling, encouraging, and reinforcing pro-social behaviors to include patience, empathy, cooperation, professionalism, and respect. Supervises, guides and/or instructs the work assignments of subordinate staff. Performs as shift supervisor of a unit or program.

JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:

* Assumes responsibility for the custody, security, and care of youth through adherence to policies and standard operating procedures governing the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice.
* Maintains order and discipline by intervening with youth through active supervision and controlling inappropriate youth behavior to maintain a safe and secure environment. Ensures the provision of direct support, guidance, and structure for detained youth with an emphasis on safety, personal conduct, care, and rehabilitation.
* Supervises and plans work of assigned staff.
* Completes administrative paperwork, the preparation and maintenance of records, forms, and reports.
* Develops work and security procedures.
* Supervises contraband searches and inspections, inventories, maintains physical control of logs, keys, tools, weapons, and related equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have valid Driver License.

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

Job responsibilities: A lieutenant directly supervises assigned sergeants and correctional officers. This position is responsible for the custody and care of offenders; maintaining order and discipline among offenders; and scheduling, training and supervising staff in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) directives. In addition to leading a shift, the person in this role will make hiring decisions and maintain daily shift rosters ensuring all required posts are filled.

Essential functions:

  1. Serve as shift supervisor. Conduct daily shift briefings to provide updated information and issuance of chemical agents.
  2. Maintain daily shift roster to ensure required posts are filled; address staffing shortages and post vacancies.
  3. Supervise, protect, instruct, train, counsel and evaluate assigned employees and offenders; schedule employees' and offenders' work and off-duty time; assist in formulating security and work procedures.
  4. Supervise and direct searches for contraband and provide security.
  5. Supervise and provide custody and security of offenders including observation of offenders and offenders assigned to work duty, which includes long periods of sitting and standing.
  6. Perform specific security functions including “pat” and “strip” searches, by squatting and bending to perform such functions.
  7. Provide staff training, evaluates staff performance, investigate staff misconduct and implement organizational and personnel changes as approved by the warden and coordinated with the human resources manager prior to implementation.
  8. Participate in the interview and selection process of new employees, including making recommendations for new hires.
  9. Responds to emergencies including climbing stairs, steps, and ladders while searching for escaped offenders, hearing calls for and calling for help, giving first aid at the emergency site, carrying an injured or unconscious offender or employee various distances to safety up or down stairs, steps, and ladders; and use force and deadly force to include the use of chemical agents and firearms to control offenders.
  10. Read, review and properly apply information found in offender records which is related to the offenders' health and safety and to the security of the facility. Provide appropriate information as needed to other personnel and maintain confidentiality.
  11. Supervise the preparation and maintenance of records, forms and reports.
  12. Prepare and complete required incident reports and logs in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.
  13. Oversee the count process and ensure accurate facility count at designated time intervals.
  14. Authorize and oversee planned use of force events; complete all notifications and reports as required.
  15. Complete rounds of all areas of the facility and be accessible to staff where needed.
  16. Conduct minor disciplinary hearings.
  17. Act as family liaison officer for visitation.
  18. Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  19. Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed; provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
  20. Maintain accountability of staff, offenders and property; adhere to safety practices.

It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

Education and experience requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited senior high school or equivalent or GED.
  • Three years full-time, wage-earning correctional custody or law enforcement experience to include one year in the supervision of employees. Operational Review Sergeant or Security Threat Group Sergeant experience may be substituted for one (1) year of the required supervisory experience. Thirty semester hours with a minimum of six semester hours in Criminal Justice from a college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or United States Department of Education (USDE) may be substituted for one year of the required non-supervisory experience.
  • A valid driver license in the state of Texas with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon passing exams and skills tests in the TDCJ Correctional Officer Pre-Service Training Academy.
