Directs daily operations of Special Needs Dental clinical practice. Includes oversight and management of student, resident, and faculty practitioners within the clinic. Responsible for integration of clinic with other clinical practice locations in the UT Dentistry, San Antonio enterprise. This position will develop and maintain patient referral pathways and integrate patient care between community and state resources in the southwest Texas region. Additional responsibilities include curricular development related to Special Needs Dental care, delivery of clinical services, and fiscal management of the clinic.

* Collaborates with department chairs, program directors, school administration administrators, faculty, and revenue cycle team to ensure economic and efficient clinical operations.
* Identifies, evaluates, and analyzes community needs and referral patterns.
* Provides recommendations for growth plans and feasibility studies in collaboration with institutional/departmental decision support teams.
* Collaborates with all specialties and establishes business plans for new opportunities for growth of the practice.
* Partners with practice plan teams for new practice implementation and equipment/supplies purchasing assessment.
* Collaborates with marketing to conduct outreach events and promote practice volumes.
* Collaborates with department leadership to improve clinic access by obtaining and analyzing clinical data and developing recommendations.

Education:

Responsibilities
  • Logs requests for off-sites and diagnostic studies. Maintains chronic clinic logs and ensures that appointments are scheduled according to DOC protocols.
  • Participates in the hiring and orientation of all dentists and auxiliary personnel. Provides annual performance evaluations. Recommends, when necessary, corrective action and/or termination to Regional Manager.
  • Participates in the development of in service programs and maintains public relations with other health disciplines within the institution(s).
  • Monitors dental services and creates and/or modifies procedures, supplies and equipment to ensure reasonable and adequate delivery of dental services.
  • Reviews all requests for referral to dental specialists outside the correctional system for validity of need. Assists in obtaining agreements with outside dental specialists for the treatment of these cases.
  • Evaluates the oral health of patients to determine need for prosthetic replacement of missing teeth within standard operating procedures.
  • Ensures that adequate dental supplies, instruments and equipment are available at all sites. Directs the dental prosthetic laboratory function to ensure timely fabrication of dental prosthesis.
  • Develops and implements dental clinic programs to maintain compliance with the requirements of federal and state governmental agencies. Ensures dental clinics meet required accreditation standards, except for the physical facility requirements, which are the responsibility of the Department of Corrections.
  • Completes and approves monthly coverage/schedule of dentists. Facilitates resolution of dentists scheduling conflicts.
  • Implements monthly peer review of procedures and delivery of dental services in accordance with the standards for JCAHCO, NCCHC, ACA or other accrediting agencies.
  • Assists in securing and maintaining proper accreditation, including compliance with the requirements of the Commission on Accreditation for Corrections and Standards for Adult Correctional Institutions.
  • Related project/tasks as assigned.
  • Performs and interprets radiographic exams as indicated.
  • Provide dental treatment to include emergency treatment of the teeth and surrounding soft tissues such as oral surgery, restorative dentistry and periodontal therapy within the scope of a general Dentist including extractions. Correction of significant oral problems, which may adversely affect patient's health as, deemed necessary.
  • Makes proper referral for procedures, which cannot be performed at facility.
  • Reports any unusual occurrences or accidents to the site or Site Medical Director.

A. Patient Care
